The fourth generation Acura MDX was introduced in 2022 and its key rival, the Genesis GV80, was refreshed in 2023. We examine their powertrain, tech, interior, space, safety, price and more to find out how their 2024 models compare against each other in a head-to-head battle. Both models are offered with V6 engines, all-wheel-drive, luxurious interiors, commendable safety features and crash test ratings and price. The 2024 Genesis GV80 offers two engine options, with the 2.4-liter turbo four as the base option. The 2024 Acura MDX uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine for the most basic trim lines. However, the turbocharged motor in the GV80 is more powerful and AWD is standard across the range.

The standard engine in the Genesis GV80 is a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4 engine, which produces 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. The higher trims offer a 3.5-liter turbo V6 engine, which produces 375hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission with AWD is standard across all trims.

The 2024 Acura MDX uses a 3.5-liter V6 engine as the standard offering for the SUV, which makes 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. The higher trims of the MDX use a smaller displacement 3.0-liter engine with a turbo that makes 335 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Both engine options in the Genesis are more powerful in comparison to the Acura. However, neither the GV80 nor the MDX offer hybrid powertrains, which result in a generally weaker fuel economy thanks to their large capacity engines.

Fuel Economy

Neither the 2024 Genesis GV80, nor the 2024 Acura MDX, offer best-in-class fuel economy. The base 2.5-liter turbo engine in the GV80 is EPA rated for 20 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is the most efficient version of the 2024 Acura MDX. According to the EPA, this version can return 19 MPG in the city, and 26 MPG on the highway. While the Genesis is marginally more economical if you drive predominantly in the city, the Acura is the one to go for if you spend more time on the highway. Either way, both SUVs offer a comparable combined fuel economy rating of 22 MPG.

Interior Design And Technology

The Genesis GV80 fits the brief of being a luxury vehicle very well. The interior design is elegant, and the premium materials make it plush. The SUV offers tri-zone auto climate control, heated and ventilated seats, a large touchscreen infotainment system, 4 USB ports, two 12V power outlets, an 110V AC power outlet in the second row, and a panoramic sunroof.

The latest Acura MDX is also quite luxurious on the inside, especially with its quilted-stitching seats and 9 massage modes. Like the Genesis, the MDX also offers heated and ventilated seats, tri-zone auto climate control, but has six USB ports, four 12V outlets and an AC outlet in the second row. However, a cool feature on the Acura is the removable middle 2nd row seat that makes ingress and egress to the third row even easier. The MDX also has wireless smartphone charging pads and active noise control, like the GV80.

As standard, the Genesis GV80 has a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The tech onboard is compatible with smartphone integration applications like Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It even comes paired with a 12-speaker premium sound system. While analog dials with an 8-inch screen are standard, higher trims offer a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver.

The Acura MDX has a smaller 12.3-inch touchscreen in comparison to the GV80. But it is also integrated with Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The sound system is also superior in the Acura with 16 speakers and a 12.3-in digital instrument cluster is standard across all trim lines, while a head-up display is available on higher trims.

Both the 2024 Acura MDX and Genesis GV80 offer options with three row seating. But a closer look at the numbers reveals that the Acura offers more cargo room in every case. With all the rows of seats in place, the MDX has 18.1 cu-ft of cargo volume, against 11.6 cu-ft of the GV80. With the third row folded, the Acura keeps its advantage at 48 cu-ft over the Genesis to offer 34.9 cu-in of storage. Both models offer 40:20:40 folding second row seats, but fold them all down, and you get up to 95 cu-ft in the Acura, and 84 cu-ft in the Genesis. As mentioned before, the Acura’s middle seat in the second row is also removable.

Both the 2024 model years of the Genesis GV80 and Acura MDX are freshly updated versions, and customers of neither SUVs of the model year have reported any serious complaints. Previous model year GV80s suffered common faults like stalling on the highway with engine problems or issues with the transmission switching to neutral or park, when on the move as reported by the NHTSA. As for the previous model year Acura MDX, some major faults involved issues with electronic components.
