The 2024 Lincoln Corsair and Volvo XC40 are small luxury SUVs that deliver the modern conveniences and driver aids car shoppers demand in a premium vehicle.

Because of their relatively small dimensions, they’re easy to maneuver and on the gas budget. Each has room for five passengers and the all-season grip of all-wheel drive (AWD) — it’s standard on the XC40.

To see how they compare, let’s take a look at some highlights of the Corsair and XC40.

2024 Lincoln Corsair

Pricing for the 2024 Lincoln Corsair starts at $40,385, including delivery fees. There are three available trims: Premiere, Reserve, and Grand Touring. Since the Grand Touring is a plug-in hybrid, we review it separately.

The Premiere and Reserve models are powered by a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, and AWD is optional. A refresh last year brought an updated front-end design and the addition of a 13.2-inch touchscreen.

Lincoln Corsair Highlights

Sliding second row: This is a fantastic feature, particularly for those transporting taller folks. Rear legroom is already a strong suit of the Lincoln Corsair, yet its sliding second row can move forward and back by about six inches. In just a few moments, it can create more passenger stretch-out space or extra cargo volume.

Hands-free driving: Called BlueCruise, it’s offered starting on the entry-level Premiere trim. This hands-free highway driving aid can be used on more than 130,000 miles of roads throughout North America. We’ve found it to be user-friendly and a convenient stress reliever during long trips.

Hushed cabin: One aspect of the Lincoln Corsair that defines this SUV is how quiet the cabin remains in all driving environments. The ride is soft, though not floaty, and the whole package creates a calm and relaxing driving experience.

2024 Volvo XC40

Having dropped the front-wheel drive and less powerful base engine this model year, the 2024 Volvo XC40 sees its starting price tick upward to $41,995 — or roughly $5,000 above the 2023 model’s entry-level price tag. Volvo sweetens the deal by also adding more features to the base Core trim, such as keyless entry, a surround-view parking camera, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a wireless charging pad.

All three available trims — Core, Plus, and Ultimate — are equipped with a 247-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder paired with an 8-speed automatic and AWD.

Volvo XC40 Highlights

Google-based infotainment unit: This tech feature consists of a 9-inch vertically mounted touchscreen that operates via Google-based software. Among its many perks, this slick system comes with highly detailed Google Maps navigation, intuitive “Hey Google” voice commands, multiple USB-C ports, and over-the-air updates.

Volvo safety: The automotive brand known for inventing the three-point seatbelt and moose-avoidance tests politely extends its safety know-how to its smallest SUV. The XC40 is packed with active safety features and scores top marks in crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Classy and comfortable cabin: Volvo spent a great deal of time making the XC40 cabin airy and comfortable. The fit and finish are excellent, and the seats deserve special mention for their support and comfort.

Similarities

The Lincoln Corsair and Volvo XC40 are stylish and comfortable, not to mention a relative bargain compared to some of their direct competitors. Thanks to their supportive seating, quiet cabins, and light steering, each prioritizes a calm and refined driving experience.

Conclusion

Picking a winner here could come down to hard numbers. It’s easy to make the case for the Lincoln Corsair as the value choice since it has significantly more interior space, a slightly lower starting price, and a longer powertrain warranty. The Volvo XC40 counters with standard AWD and its high-tech infotainment system. We think each is worthy of a test drive to make the best and most informed SUV buying decision.
