Consumer Reports publishes data on car reliability annually using survey results from over 300,000 car owners. Despite the rising popularity of electric vehicles, the most recent survey found that electric cars have 79% more reliability issues than traditional gas-powered vehicles.

According to 2024 data from Cox Automotive, the parent company of Kelly Blue Book, consumers paid an average price of $52,314 for electric vehicles. Because electric vehicles cost, on average, $10,000 more than gas powered vehicles, consumers should know whether or not their purchase is a worthwhile one.
Here are three luxury electric SUVs to stay away from buying.
1. Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
Mercedes-Benz is a well-known luxury brand, and the EQS SUV, which was released in 2023, starts at $104,400. One drawback is that, due to its high price tag, it does not qualify for the federal tax credit, according to Kelly Blue Book.
MSN reported this luxury vehicle loses 47.8% of its value after just one year. While the car is sleek and high-end, this high depreciation rate makes this SUV not worth buying. Additionally, Consumer Reports ranks Mercedes-Benz as one of the least reliable car brands
2. Audi E-Tron
In 2024, Consumer Reports rates Audi as one of the least reliable car brands, placing it 25th out of 29 rated brands.
Unfortunately, Audi’s luxury electric SUV, E-Tron, hasn’t received positive ratings. Consumer Reports ranks it 63/100. Additionally, maintenance costs are exceptionally high, costing approximately $1,200 per year.
With a starting price tag of $55,200, the Audi E-Tron isn’t worth the high cost to maintain it.
3. Hummer EV SUV
GMC recently created the Hummer EV SUV, which reimagines the old Hummers as a luxury electric vehicle. In general, this expensive vehicle which costs around $100,000, has more features than a typical driver needs.
Cars.com scored it a 3.5/5 in reliability, value, and comfort. This car is designed to go off-road and has a unique crabwalk feature, which appeals to a very specific driver.
Typical drivers who want to use an electric SUV as an everyday car would be overpaying for features they likely won’t use if they choose the Hummer EV SUV.
