When John Cena shuffled on to the Dolby Theatre stage like a toy Action Man doing side steps in the gym, the only thing preventing him from full frontal nudity was a rather large envelope containing the Oscar nominations for best Costume Design. “Costumes, they are so important,” he joked rather vulnerably to rapturous applause. “Maybe the most important thing there is.”

His ‘costume’ relied almost entirely on a Wrestlemania physique that’s banked him roles in Hollywood blockbusters. But crucially for this stunt, he is wearing two carefully selected items of clothing. While his choice of footwear may have put some viewers off Birkenstocks for life, less has been said about the other, um, piece on display: Cena’s Rolex.

The piece in question is his trusty Explorer II, a white-dialled, easily legible, tough-love 42mm tool watch that Rolex first debuted in 1971, primarily for polar explorers who needed to know the time while inside the Arctic Circle. It has that all-important 24-hour scale around the bezel, particularly helpful for knowing the time during days of no light or darkness.
It’s a lowkey grail watch you’ll find Tom Hardy wearing, pretty low down in the Rolex pecking order but still popular in the grand scheme of watches. “Known for its robustness and precision in the most extreme conditions, John Cena’s Rolex Explorer II seemed to help him navigate the fine line between daring and elegance with ease,” says founder of Bob’s Watches, Paul Altieri.
