$50k for Olympic gold medalist – FBC News

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the cabinet has decided to establish a medal incentive fund for athletes taking part in this year’s Paris 2024 Olympics.

Rabuka clarifies that the incentive is for individual athlete, management and coaches.

“Cabinet has agreed that medal incentive fund be established. Cash rewards for gold medal to be set at $50,000 $20,000 for a silver medal, and $10,000 for a bronze medal. This ensures that our athletes are duly recognized and rewarded for their relentless efforts and dedication”

Rabuka says Sports Minister Jese Saukuru had made submissions on this.

When questioned on the funding, he says they have made proposal in the upcoming budget.

The Prime Minister says he is confident with the continued support of the government and the people of Fiji that will help the athletes achieve greater success at the Paris Olympics.

Rabuka has urged Fijians to come together and rally behind the athletes, cheer them on, and show them the unwavering support and appreciation they deserve.

He also announced reward for double Olympic gold medal winner Jerry Tuwai.

Tuwai received an incentive of $33,300 from the government.

The double gold medalist has thanked the government for recognizing the efforts of the players.

“We play we give our all and we did not expect all this kind of things and we are just thankful and grateful that it can be given to us. I think everyone if Fiji, in the world are doing this for the family. Foe me it means a lot and we are really grateful to the government.”

The Prime Minister acknowledged Tuwai on his outstanding achievement, and also wish all athletes the very best as they prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
