A penthouse is more than just the highest residence atop an apartment building. It’s a status symbol—the culmination of someone’s success story, similar to owning a certain type of vintage car or a one-of-a-kind timepiece. The sky-high hideouts often provide enhanced privacy and security, especially in multi-unit buildings, and penthouse ownership can also come with special perks and VIP access, not to mention the best views in the entire building.

The enduring appeal of the penthouse is apparent in both established apartment houses and brand-new luxury towers; in fact, they are typically among the most expensive units in a building and the first to be sold in new developments. Whether you’re seeking a multi-generational family home with an expansive layout, an epic bachelor pad, or a home-away-from-home with an epic view, Robb Report has rounded up some of the most amazing penthouses in major cities around the world. Welcome home.

  • New York City

One of the most well-known buildings in New York, 432 Park Avenue, has had its fair share of controversy, but it’s undeniably one of the most beautiful buildings in New York. Listed for $130 million by Official Partners, PH96—that’s right, folks, it’s on the supertall tower’s 96th floor!—offers heart-stopping views of the city. The 8,255-square-foot spread has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, along with oversized living spaces that include a huge formal dining room. Ten-foot-square single-pane windows welcome in plenty of natural light and frame views over Central Park, the downtown skyline, and the Hudson and East Rivers. The best part? These views will likely remain unobstructed, as 432 Park is one of the tallest buildings in New York.

  • London

The Astor penthouse in London can be yours for $43 million (£35 million). The lavishly appointed duplex is the largest of the five residences in the Heritage Collection at the 9 Millbank development in the city’s posh Westminster area. This exceptional penthouse, with many historic features and opulent detailing of a bygone era, is the epitome of British luxury and design. With a beautiful curved staircase leading to the second floor, a high arched ceiling, and meticulously conserved plasterwork, The Astor is like living within an palace but with all the comforts and conveniences of modern life. There are five bedrooms, a media room, and, of course, a private terrace with panoramic views of the River Thames and Westminster’s many landmarks.

  • Miami

In Miami, a city brimming with larger-than-life residences, it can be tough to decide which is the most impressive penthouse in town. There are sprawling aeries with massive rooftop gardens and villa-like penthouses with private swimming pools. However, along the waterfront in the downtown district, the triplex penthouse at the sleek and slender Aston Martin Residences offers some added perks. Revealed last year, the $59 million penthouse, dubbed Unique, spans three floors and contains a whopping seven bedrooms. Wraparound terraces on each level take advantage of Miami’s fabulous year-round weather. And, if that’s not enough, the purchase of the penthouse comes with an Aston Martin Vulcan, a limited-edition car valued at $3.2 million.

  • Los Angeles

Last month, Robb Report did a run down on some of the newest and most impressive condo towers in Los Angeles. And, though it’s a city known for its palatial single-family homes and megamansions, for Angelenos seeking a pampered, white-glove lifestyle with plenty of VIP services and on-site amenities, a penthouse is a fabulous option. Pendry Residences West Hollywood is one of the city’s buzziest new developments, and the complex’s Terrace Estate 705 doesn’t disappoint with its vast rooftop. Almost larger than the indoor living areas, this penthouse has three bedrooms and is listed for $13.5 million. And, yes, there are uninterrupted views that sweep over the city.

  • Dubai

Dubai certainly has its fair share of opulent single-family homes, but the $50 million Volante penthouse offers something a single-family home can’t: bird’s-eye views of Dubai’s glitting and rapidly expanding skyline. The four-bedroom penthouse is spread over four levels and includes a double-height living room, an intimate study, and a 10-seat movie theater. There’s a smart home automation system and an elevator that services three of the four levels. In the living room, 26-foot-tall glass doors slide open onto a spacious two-story rooftop terrace that’s complete with a private lap pool. The terraces also feature Mediterranean-style gardens and, of course, mesmerizing skyline views that include the Burj Khalifa.

  • San Francisco

The LEED Platinum residential tower at 181 Fremont in San Francisco houses one of the West Coast’s most impressive penthouses. Listed for $46 million, the full-floor Grand Penthouse spans nearly 7,000 square feet with four bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The aerie features custom interiors and furnishings by MASS Beverly, marble fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows with views over the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. Ten-foot-high ceilings, designer touches, walnut floors, and marble counters and bathrooms delight even the most discerning buyers.

  • Paris

It doesn’t get more iconic than a penthouse in Paris with a view of the Eiffel Tower. Located in the city’s natty 16th arrondissement, this 3,200-square-foot penthouse is listed for $14.3 million (or €13,520,000). There are two living rooms, one of which has a library, a gym, and a sauna/hammam. It is, however, the sprawling outdoor spaces that draw one in—or, rather, out. The rooftop terrace is accessible from nearly every room and has plenty of room for alfresco dining and relaxing amid lush gardens, where by day and night there are front-row views of the Eiffel Tower.
