Ashlia, a new luxury clothing rental boutique, has opened its doors in Muir of Ord on the Black Isle.

Founded by mother Carla Krzyzanowski and her daughters Lia and Ashlee Smith, the shop offers high-end occasion wear for rent at a fraction of retail prices.

Ashlia provides a range of occasion wear in sizes 6 to 22, along with matching accessories.

Sustainable Fashion and Affordable Luxury

The business emphasises sustainability, promoting a culture of reuse and recycling while offering glamorous fashion options.

Customers can rent items for up to 30 days, making luxury outfits more accessible for special events such as weddings, proms, and other occasions.

Initially launched as an online-only business earlier this year, Ashlia has now expanded to a physical location at Ord Industrial Estate.

This move allows customers to try on outfits in person before renting.

The shop’s opening was supported by funding from the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme and GC Business Finance, which helped with refurbishment, fit-out, and new stock acquisition.

The family-run business combines Carla’s background in retail and design with her daughters’ involvement while they pursue their studies.

With the new shop’s operation, Ashlia is considering hiring additional staff and exploring expansion into other Scottish towns and cities.

‘Sew long to fast-fashion’

Lia Smith said: “We’ve been blown away by the reaction so far to our dress hire concept, with people renting outfits for prom, graduation dances, the races, weddings and more.

“Many people wanted to know how the rental process worked, considering it a more sustainable and affordable way to look their best at upcoming events.

“With our new store open, we’ll be able to help even more customers find the right outfits, with space for them to try on different styles and experiment with different accessories.

Lia and Ashlee Smith

“Everyone wants to look their best when they are going out, but often these outfits are only worn once.”

“Renting a dress is not only great for the planet but also means people can wear luxury pieces at a much more affordable cost.”

Barry McCulloch, Senior Manager, UK Network, Scotland at the British Business Bank, said: “Fast fashion has a significant environmental footprint, so it is great to support a family-run business which is going against the trend and providing a way to make style more sustainable.

“The market looks set to grow with consumers increasingly looking for more eco-conscious options when shopping, and Ashlia is well positioned to maximise that opportunity.

“As well as supporting financially, the British Business Bank recognises the role smaller businesses can play in the transition to a more sustainable, net-zero economy.”
