HILLSBORO, Ore. — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WSCO) is investigating after a break-in at the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Hillsboro, where the contents of a large display case full of gold items were stolen.

Deputies responded to an alarm on Christmas Eve at 2:21 a.m. There, they found a broken window leading into the building, as well as footsteps heading south from the museum, WCSO said. The individual escaped despite containment efforts and an attempt to track them down with police dogs.

With the help of museum staff, deputies searched the area, where they discovered a display case, which held numerous gold items, had been broken into. The total value of the missing items is not being reported at this time, said the WCSO.

According to the museum’s security footage, the suspect appears to be a white man wearing jeans and a jacket.
