According to media reports, this Friday, 17 Kazak tourists were basking in their yacht’s splendor, and wanted a fireworks show as part of their exuberant party. That is when the evening took an unexpected and perilous turn. Sparks from their fireworks landed on the island’s only pine forest, setting it ablaze. Despite their frantic efforts, the crew and guests of the 180-foot yacht (in all possibility a charter) could not control the raging fire. They informed the fire department and fled the scene, which was also witnessed by other boats in the region.
Greek authorities intervened, temporarily arrested 13 crew members, and thoroughly searched the vessel. The mayor of Hydra, Giorgos Koukoudakis, was left in outrage and expressed his displeasure, pledging legal action against those responsible.
