SINGAPORE — After winning Singapore’s first SEA Games xiangqi (Chinese chess) gold medal in May, Ngo Lan Huong has followed up her feat by clinching the city-state’s first Asian Games xiangqi medal on Saturday (7 October).
The 43-year-old earned a bronze medal in the women’s individual event, finishing third out of 13 xiangqi exponents after five days of competition at the Hangzhou Qi-Yuan Chess Hall. She clinched her medal after beating Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoang Yen 2-0 in her final match on Saturday.
Along the way, Ngo also registered victories over Thailand’s Suratsada Promsirinimit, compatriot Fiona Tan and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Phi Liem. She drew with China’s silver medallist Wang Linna and Malaysia’s Jee Xin Ru, and lost to China’s gold medallist Zuo Wenjing.
Ngo was born in Vietnam, and had been a 10-time national xiangqi champion in her home country. She married Singaporean former national xiangqi player Anthony Kng in 2012, and became a Singapore citizen in 2017.
The former world champion decided to make her comeback in 2022, and immediately clinched a bronze medal at the 2022 Hanoi SEA Games. She followed up with a third-place finish at the 2022 world championships, before claiming the historic SEA Games gold in Phnom Penh.
With Ngo’s bronze medal, Team Singapore have amassed a total of three golds, six silvers and seven bronzes at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
