What is it? The newest Porsche 911, the Carrera T, is yet another step on the grand staircase that is the “992” generation of Porsche’s flagship model. There were 23 variants at last count, each bundling equipment for a micro-niche and, in total, presenting a master class in removing the last available dollar from each consumer. The T stands for Touring, though it’s a historic Porsche designation related to touring car racing, not comfortable cruising. To wit, this car has lower suspension, bigger wheels and the sports-chrono pack. Reduced soundproofing and other weight-reducing tricks save 35 kilograms.

The Porsche 911 Carrera T in, gulp, Python Green.

What does it cost? The base car is $300,700. Ours had Python Green exterior paint (a $5700 option, and a very courageous choice when resale is considered), with the same bright hue mirrored in the seat belt straps and interior stitching. Other add-ons, including sports seats, lifted the price to $320,810, plus on-road costs.

What makes it go? A 3-litre version of Porsche’s revered flat six, with twin turbochargers. The output of 283 kW and 450 Nm is the same as the base 911, simply known as the Carrera (starting from about $278K). And, as with the standard Carrera, the T is rear-wheel drive.

The latest version is about 360 mm longer and 240 mm wider than the original 911.

Why would you want it? Because it is a Porsche 911. Despite the hyperbole, the model’s reputation is built on rock-solid principles. It steers, handles, performs and sounds like nothing else, and is surprisingly practical too. We’re going to miss that flat-six sound when its gone, too; on that score, it’s not too long before some level of electrification arrives, though the company insists the 911 will be the last Porsche model to move to full battery power. Afficionados will appreciate the T is available with a seven-speed manual transmission. Ours had the eight-speed automated PDK, listed as a “no cost option”.

That old Porsche magic continues with the new Carrera T.

Why wouldn’t you? Because you consider it too dear or too big. Certainly the latest generation is about 360 mm longer and 240 mm wider than the original 911 (though a tiny bit lower). However, if cost or size is an issue, Porsche has a deal for you: the small, less exorbitantly priced 718 series (better known as the Cayman/Boxster twins, and with at least a dozen variations of its own). The T is noisier than the standard Carrera. Another buying consideration: a 911 facelift/upgrade is expected in 2024.

And in conclusion Beautifully styled, lovely to drive, and exquisitely engineered, the 911 has always been a critical hit and the subject of often-extreme owner adulation. Drive one – ideally on a racetrack or closed road – and you just might join the cult.
