Tommy Kim Leads Seven Flight Wins by Mids During Navy Gold Invite

 Navy Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Tommy Kim posted an overall record of 5-1 this weekend to win both his singles and doubles flights during the Navy Gold Invitational held this weekend in Annapolis.  Those were two of the combined seven flights won by the Mids during the three-day event that concluded Sunday.

The Navy Gold Invitational featured players from Binghamton, Coppin State, Drexel, Hampton, Harford C.C., Morgan State, Navy Princeton, Richmond and Temple competing in flights of four singles players or doubles teams in a round-robin format.

Kim posted a 2-1 record to win the White B flight in singles.  Both he and Drexel’s Egor Kirakosov compiled 2-1 records in singles, but Kirakosov was unable to play Kim in their head-to-head match due to an injury which gave the tiebreaker to Kim.

He also teamed with Herrick Legaspi to post a 3-0 record and win the Red A doubles flight.  The pair first defeated the Drexel tandem of Hussein El Tawil and Pierre Humayou in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (8-6).  The Mids then recorded a victory by the exact same score over Binghamton’s William Morais Binnie and Andrew Fang.  Kim and Legaspi closed the doubles competition with an 8-6 win against the Morgan State duo of Makkijha Brown and Rhajzon Rankins.

Also winning singles flights were Matthew McNair, J.J. Etterbeek, Jason Kim and Eric Liu.  Each of those four Mids compiled 3-0 records to win their respective flight.

Navy’s additional doubles flight victory was recorded by the pairing of Jake Young and Andrew Gu.  That team also won all three of its matches.

The Mids as a team posted a 24-9 record in singles and an 11-7 record in doubles during the tournament.

While the majority of the Navy team remained in Annapolis, four Mids traveled to the West Coast to take part in the third annual San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic held on the University of San Diego campus.  Players from Navy, San Diego, Pepperdine, San Diego State and Boise State took part in the event.

Nathan Nguyen played a trio of three-set matches on the weekend.  He dropped a 6-7, 6-3, 1-6 match to Pepperdine’s Photos Photiades, won a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision over San Diego’s Blake Kasday and lost, 7-5, 6-7, 5-7, to Kyvan Rietkerk from San Diego.

Navy’s additional singles win during the event was posted by Aniketh Ayinala, who earned a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over San Diego State’s Alexander Mandma.

The doubles team of Luke Garner and Sasha Panyan tallied a pair of victories while out west.  The Mids opened the event with a 7-6 (14-12) win over San Diego State’s Mandma and Chikaya Sato and ended it with a 6-3 triumph over Boise State’s John Chin and Jip van Assendelft.

The team’s fall slate of tournaments will conclude Nov. 10-12 when the Mids play host to the Navy Invitational.
