A DUPLICATE key to a fortified safe was used to steal over 5kg of gold worth over Rs 3.2 crore and over Rs 10 lakh cash from a gold trader’s shop in Raviwar Peth area in the heart of the city early Monday.

Police said they suspect that either a current or former employee of the establishment was involved in the heist.

Officials from Faraskhana police station said the theft took place in a shop located on Sainath Path in Raviwar Peth. The shop is located on the floor above the public outreach office of Kasba Peth MLA Ravindra Dhangekar.

Police said the shop supplies gold to other jewellery shops and goldsmiths and at any given point, has large quantities of gold stored in a fortified safe installed at the establishment.

Preliminary examination of the security cameras installed on the premises suggests that the heist took place around 3am on Monday and came to light when the shop was opened.

Police said gold chains over 5kg worth Rs 3.21 crores and Rs 10.93 lakh cash were stolen from the safe.

“A security camera shows a man wearing a hoodie entering the shop by opening the two doors using keys, which we believe are duplicate. He is then seen opening the safe with a key, which is also a duplicate. He steals the gold chains and cash and meets his accomplice standing downstairs, possibly as a lookout,” said an officer from Faraskhana police station.

“As of now, we are probing the involvement of two people. We have reasons to believe that either a current or a former employee at the gold trader’s shop is the involved in the heist,” said the police officer.

Dadasaheb Chudappa, senior inspector at Faraskhana police station, said, “We have formed multiple teams and have launched a probe into the case.”
