At an estimated $1.73 billion, Monday’s Powerball jackpot is currently the second-largest prize in Powerball history.
A winner of the record-breaking sum has yet to emerge, so the thousands who have purchased tickets can continue to dream about what they’d do with the life-changing payout.
And while some might dream of a mansion, luxury cars or putting their children through college, others have more, shall we say, unconventional ideas of what they’d do with the money.
A Reddit user called iforgotmypassword111 asked the Milwaukee subreddit earlier this week, “What’s the most Milwaukee thing you’d do if you win that $1.4 billion Powerball tonight?” (This was before the jackpot rose another $0.3 billion).
Here are some Reddit users’ responses.
What would Milwaukee Reddit users do if they won the Powerball jackpot?
A user called 2ndmost said, “I’m spending whatever it takes to Save the Domes,” a reference to the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory domes, which face an uncertain future and possible demolition.
Another user called After-Willingness271 seconded this, commenting that if they won the lottery, they’d “save our domes.” Other users said they’d “Expand the domes” and “Fix the Domes.”
Some users shared personal dreams.
A user called bopper1826 said they would “grab a condo on the river in the Third Ward and make my dream restaurant in the city that pays extremely well, and I don’t care if it runs at a loss.” The Third Ward recently ranked seventh on a list of Milwaukee neighborhoods with the most expensive average monthly rents for a one-bedroom apartment.
User jjenofalltrades said they’d “Buy a house [on] Lake Drive,” and blindolbat said they’d “Do a beautification project on Bluemound from Hawley to 76th, then turn the freeway entrances and exits on Hawley into a pollinator meadow. It’s the neighborhood where I grew up.”
Many users’ dreams also involved local celebrity the Milverine (aka John Hamann), a man who looks like the Marvel Comics character Wolverine and has long been spotted walking shirtless around Milwaukee.
“I’m going to take the Milverine out to dinner at the Miller Park Way Arbys,” said user whiskey_riverss.
And user beerandtots said they would “Send [Milverine] on a nationwide ‘Milwaukee’s Ambassador’ tour.” Another user wanted to hire the Milverine as their bodyguard.
Round_Rooms said they’d “Make a bronze Milverine to stand next to the Fonze.”
Not surprisingly, lots of Reddit users’ dreams involved beer and sports.
Lenn_Cicada commented, “I’d pay for the Brewers stadium, rename it County Stadium, and let everyone with a Milwaukee County ID in for free,” and dboehm29 said they’d “Invest in the Brewers to stay forever.”
Beast6213 would, “Buy the Brewers and take them to the World Series next year.”
And Mr-Domi-Arigato wanted to, “Open a Men’s Pro futbol team (either MLS or NSL) and invest in our communities to develop local talent.”
Other users said they’d get Bucks season tickets, pay the tab of everyone in the city for a night, and purchase their favorite bar or brewery.
