The Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of the Delhi Police in the South West district arrested three men on Thursday after a 12-day operation monitoring the thefts of high-end cars in the area, leading to the recovery of several stolen vehicles and illegal firearms.
The police identified the accused as Sagar (28), Ashraf Sultan (30) and Kuldeep Singh (28) and said that four stolen luxury cars – two Hyundai Cretas, one Kia Seltos, and one Toyota Innova – apart from a stolen scooter were recovered. The vehicles had been stolen from areas like Uttam Nagar, Vikaspuri, Ashok Vihar, Rajouri Garden, and Mukherjee Nagar, the police said.
The arrests were made by a team formed to address motor vehicle thefts in the district. It monitored the activities of various auto-lifting gangs active in Delhi and the patterns in high-end car theft and disposal, police sources said.
“Accused Sagar and Sultan were found in possession of illicit firearms, which they procured from one receiver of Ranchi, namely Pintu, and one Meerut-based gang leader Rahees (alias Mulla), who are absconding. Efforts are being made to nab the other co-associates and affect more recovery of stolen cars and illicit firearms,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Rohit Meena said.
During interrogation, Sultan allegedly revealed that he specialised in stealing high-end cars from various parts of Delhi NCR and selling them to people in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Sagar, a resident of Vasant Kunj, allegedly assisted in reconnaissance for the thefts.
Among the four stolen cars recovered based on Sultan’s information, one was found in Patna, the police said. Further operations led to the arrest of Singh, who was allegedly caught with a stolen Hyundai Creta. Singh was responsible for delivering the stolen vehicles for Sultan, the police said.
The three accused were booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act, among others.
