KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – A five-goal third period outburst saw the Soo Eagles comeback and fly past the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners 7-4 in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest Friday at Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.
Making an immediate impact in his NOJHL debut, Jacob Lamoureux staked the Gold Miners to the lead in his initial on-ice action with the club by tipping in a sizzling Bemjamin Armatage wrist shot.
Kirkland Lake then went ahead by two early in the second stanza, via the power play, that saw Armatage unleash another attempt that flew by Sault Ste. Marie netminder Marino Ramirez from between the circles.
The Eagles got themselves on the board at 5:05 with Coby Fox dashing into the left circle and wiring a shot off the post and in, that eluded Gold Miners’ newcomer Trent Boryszczuk, who was making his initial league appearance.
A couple of shifts after Boryszczuk thwarted a two-man shorthanded break, the home side made it 3-1 with Noah Woodard quickly zipping a shot through Ramirez off a Luca Maiuri feed.
Continuing to trade tallies, Soo captain Kenny Belanger Jr., clicked on the power play at 11:11.
That marker saw him bang in a rebound off a Gabriel Fisher chance from the point.
Back and forth they went with Lamoureux notching his second of the night as he cranked one from up top off the post and it.
The also resulted in the Soo making a goaltending change, with Anthony Zolezzi taking over in net for the visitors.
In the final frame, the Eagles took flight, beginning with a Jack Paweski marker in the first minute as took a pass, chipped it ahead, and went in alone and neatly tucked in a backhand, after catching Kirkland Lake on a line change.
Tying it up at 8:27, Lucas Caulfield ripped a shot into the right-hand corner, to give him seven tallies on the year.
Coming right back, the Soo got the game-winner after intercepting a play in their own zone, which allowed Benjamin Pouliot to dart in on a breakaway, where he lifted his chance into the top corner.
Forcing another turnover later in the session, helped Nolan Hendry go to the net where he was initially stopped, but quickly stuffed in another opportunity.
The visitors then capped off the comeback late when netminder Zolezzi sent a long attempt down the ice, in an effort to score into an empty net, but missed, only to see Paweski be the first to the puck and put it in to complete the rally.
With the outcome, the Eagles raise their record to 13-5-0-1 while the Gold Miners fell to 4-12-2-1 with the loss.
