The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recently arrested four persons for allegedly trying to smuggle 4 kg gold into the country. The officials said the gold were hidden in wax form inside their inner-wear and in three mixer grinders they were carrying with them.
According to DRI officials, the gold is valued close to Rs 2.6 crores.
An official said they had received an input following which a DRI team laid a trap and caught two persons when they landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai from Jeddah. “The passengers were searched and 1 kg gold dust in wax form, which was specially stitched in the innerwear of both passengers was seized from each of them,” said DRI officials.
During further scrutiny, officials recovered another 2 kg gold from three mixer grinders they were carrying. “The 3 grinders felt heavier than usual. On cutting it open, we found gold pieces weighing about 2 kgs concealed therein,” DRI officials added.
It was also found that two others were outside the airport waiting to receive the gold from the passengers. Officers laid a trap and nabbed the two as well. All four have confessed to the crime.
“The two passengers and both receivers were arrested under provisions of Customs Act 1962. The operation is a result of DRI’s resolve to dismantle burgeoning syndicates who are smuggling gold,” said DRI officials.
