Police were called about 6.20am after reports a man was slumped in a parked car on Karen Avenue at Mermaid Waters.
While two officers were investigating, the man got out of the vehicle and allegedly made threats towards police with a gun.
Inspector Kayleen James claimed the man had produced a gun and “grabbed” a female officer and threatened her and her colleague.
The officer was either let go or broke free and the man fled, allegedly trying to get into a number of cars before approaching a taxi.
With the help of backup, officers approached the man and detained him after a struggle, James said.
While early reports indicated a shot had been fired, investigations suggest the gun had not been used.
James said she could “categorically” confirm no shots were fired by police and she understood that none had been fired by the man either.
However, the revolver allegedly wielded by the man had been loaded, she said.
The man is now in police custody and the officer was taken to hospital in a stable condition for “precautionary” treatment, James said.
It’s understood there is no danger to the public.
A major police presence remains on the ground in the area.
James said the man in custody was known to police.
She said police were speaking with a number of witnesses, and urged any others to come forward.
Queensland Ambulance told 9news.com.au they had been called to a location on the Gold Coast Highway, from which Karen Avenue stems, at about 6.59am local time (7.59am AEDT) in response to a police incident.
They treated three patients and one woman was taken to hospital in a stable condition for further assessment.
