ASHEVILLE – Gold’s Gym off Hendersonville Road in South Asheville will close on Dec. 15, according to an email sent those who have a membership at the location.

Gym members were notified by email that the location was closing due to the “changing needs of the area,” and stated that the existing Patton Avenue and Oakley Plaza locations will be renovated and updated.

A copy of the email was obtained by the Citizen Times from Gold’s Gym member Benjamin Dockery.

“New amenities will be offered at both locations, as well as new equipment and a fresh look and feel,” the email states of the renovations.

Those who currently have membership at the Hendersonville Road location will have their membership automatically moved over to the Oakley Plaza location, according to the email. Members also have the option of moving to the Patton Avenue gym in West Asheville. Personal training contacts will also be transferred to a new location.

Gold’s Gym operates 12 locations throughout North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina.

The owners of the 1815 Hendersonville Road location — Asheville-based developer Pulliam Properties — met with the city of Asheville staff during an Oct. 24 early assistance meeting, which are preliminary in nature, meaning that they do not indicate final plans.

During the meeting, Pulliam Properties discussed the “adaptive reuse of the space,” while potentially subdividing and adding a corner parcel to the lot. The early assistance plans also indicate that 50% of the parking lot will need to be redesigned in order to create the new corner parcel.

Previous plans for the building — which were submitted to the city in 2020 — indicated an earlier plan to convert the Gold’s Gym back into a grocery store, which it had originally been designed as in 1994. These plans have not been resubmitted since August 2020.

Gold’s Gym opened in South Asheville in 2014 after The Rush Fitness Complex closed. The location has previously been a Bi-Lo Grocery, a chain that closed its last stores in 2021.

Short-term rental use:Asheville short-term rental use up 57% since 2019. What is city regulation process?
