A Filipino in Hanoi was sentenced to eight years in prison for entering a five-star hotel gym and stealing several high-end watches and other properties, totaling to over VND2 billion ($80,963) in value.
Franz Noel Espiritu Patawaran, 33, was sentenced to jail by the Hanoi People’s Committee on Tuesday for theft.
Franz entered Vietnam on June 30, 2022, and traveled from HCMC to Hanoi. At around 11 a.m. on December 24, 2022, he stole his lover’s motorbike and rode to a five-star hotel in Ba Dinh District with the intention of stealing properties, prosecutors said.
Franz then went on the 4th floor to meet with the receptionist, told them a fake name and entered the gym. He said there was no guard at the scene, so he opened the lockers and stole four Rolex watches, priced at VND600 million, a Louis Vuiton belt, and VND6 million in cash.
He then opened another locker and stole a Patek Philippe Geneve watch, priced at VND1.4 billion, and VND1 million in cash. The stolen properties were determined to belong to two customers who were swimming at the gym.
Franz hid the stolen properties in his home. Three days later, he pawned off the Patek Philippe watch for VND20 million. He was eventually arrested on Dec. 28, and the pawnshop returned the stolen watch to the authorities.
