If you’re not ready to dive head first into the fully electric cars market, then you’re probably better suited with a hybrid electric vehicle. Furthermore, if you’re not quite sold on a smaller hybrid sedan and need something with a little more wiggle room, then you’re probably considering an SUV with a hybrid powertrain. With more and more automakers offering this kind of combination, your choices are becoming unbound with choices from compact to mid-size and standard to luxury vehicles. As you’ll see from this list, Toyota/Lexus currently dominates this side of the market when it comes to hybrid electric vehicles, but as time rolls on, you’ll start to see more automakers dipping their proverbial toes into HEVs as well.
How we got our model selections: HotCars analyzed new luxury SUVs for 2023 and 2024 model years only.
Ratings were awarded in three key categories: Starting MSRP, combined MPG (Fueleconomy.gov), and reliability (J.D. Power Quality & Reliability scores). We used a combined average from each of the categories to determine our HotCars Rating and sort these luxury SUVs in order from least to highest rated model.
Additional information, such as estimated maintenance costs during the first 10 Years (CarEdge) and recalls (NHTSA), were added for reference but not factored into the ratings.

It’s surprising that they put a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in such a small package. It packs a large punch too, at 196 horsepower and packs an even greater punch, with the XSE coming out to be under $35k. All that car and you get 66 cubic feet of storage maximum? That’s a steal.

Nearly 550 miles of range in one single tank of gas for the Escape Hybrid is rather impressive. You’ll be paying for it too, with a smaller output (even with a bigger 2.5-Liter 4-cylinder) and a $33,000 starting price. It definitely has one of the highest combined MPGs. Regardless, it’s a handsome looking vehicle.

The Kia Niro got a funky redesign for the 2023 model year. It’s hard to believe this is a standard vehicle with all the options at the price point from a power liftgate to an optional Harman Kardan Premium Sound System. All of that plus 53 combined MPG goes some way to explain how the Kia Niro scored so highly on our list.
