If there’s a compromise with Macan, he says, it is that the infrastructure for electric vehicles is still not good enough in many places. “But what is first, the car or the infrastructure? If there is no car, there is no infrastructure.”
With its EV markedly dearer than the current ICE, is Porsche going for a lower-volume, higher-margin approach? Kerner says no; Porsche sold about 80,000 Macans last year and the target is to sell even more.
“If all [our] customers see this car is much better than an ICE, then you have the chance to find a lot of other customers from other brands.
“Currently we have many orders. That’s great, but in Germany, we say ‘a spring is not a summer’. The change is not easy, but it’s our job to show all the customers that it is the right way.”
