It felt like every A-lister and their watch was in Cannes this week, but plenty of horological action was still happening away from France. We spotted noteworthy timepieces on the wrists of seven celebs far from the film festival, in fact.
Tennis superstar Roger Federer and actor Simu Liu both stepped out wearing Rolex GMT-Master IIs and singer-songwriter Zayn Malik sported a Rolex Day-Date at the SiriusXM Studios. Actors Chris Pratt and Sterling K. Brown both rocked IWC chronographs at their respective movie premieres, while Eddie Redmayne flexed an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Chris Hemsworth showed off an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak on the streets of New York City.
The seven aforementioned pieces may not be as dazzling as some of the wrist candy on the Gallic red carpets—we’re looking at you and your neon Hublot, Nicholas Cage—but they’re still worthy of a closeup.
Below are the best watch flexes of the week.
-
Chris Pratt: IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph
Chris Pratt looked like one cool cat at the world premiere of Garfield in Hollywood on Sunday. The American actor paired a sharp custom Paul Smith look with a chic IWC Pilot’s Watch. A riff on the watchmaker’s classic pilot’s watches of the 1930s and 1940s, the modern chronograph features a robust 43 mm steel case and an elegant black dial. Three subdials can be found at 12, six, and nine o’clock, while a date display is positioned at three o’clock. Powered by IWC’s in-house automatic Caliber 69385, the watch offers a power reserve of 46 hours. It will set you back $7,900.

Simu Liu: Rolex GMT-Master II
Simu Liu has proved just how solid his watch collection is on the Atlas press tour. The Canadian actor wore an eye-catching Audemars Piguet Royal Oak at a photo call earlier this month, then a Rolex GMT-Master II at a fan event in Mexico City earlier this week. Priced at $40,600, the GMT-Master II (Ref. 126715CHNR) features a 40 mm case in 18-carat Everose gold, a black dial, and an Oyster bracelet in matching Everose gold. The rotatable 24-hour bezel showcases a two-tone colorway, with a brown and black Cerachrom insert in ceramic. The hues elegantly complimented Liu’s burnt-orange Fendi ensemble.

Chris Hemsworth: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Skeleton
Chris Hemsworth plays a villain in the new Mad Max movie, and he’s dressing his wrist accordingly. The Australian actor showed off a menacing Audemars Piguet Royal Oak on the streets of New York City this week. Unveiled in 2020, the timepiece pairs a 41 mm black ceramic case and coordinating bracelet with a slate gray openworked dial. AP’s patented double balance wheel mechanism is also clad in black ceramic, while the hour markers and hands are finished in contrasting pink gold. The Royal Oak has a rather evil price tag of $101,101, too.
-
Roger Federer: Rolex GMT-Master II
As a Rolex Testimonee, Federer has been spotted in several Rollies, from a Daytona Le Mans to a Sky-Dweller to a 1908. He rocked a cool riff on a Crown classic at a Uniqlo event in France this week, though. This GMT-Master II has been nicknamed the “Batman” due to the blue and black color pairing on its Cerachrom ceramic bezel. The piece also features a 40 mm Oystersteel case, a black dial, and a Jubilee bracelet. The first Batman, Ref. 116710BLNR, was introduced in 2013, then the model was given the newer Calibre 3285 movement and rereleased as Ref. 126710BLNR in 2019. The latter will set you back $10,700.

Sterling K. Brown: IWC Portugieser Chronograph
Sterling K. Brown paired a blue Brioni suit with a steely IWC watch for the premiere of Atlas in Hollywood on Monday. Released in 1998, the Portugieser 3714 was positioned as a more affordable version of the 3712. It originally housed a modified Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement with the 12-hour counter removed to achieve the iconic two-register dial. Caliber 79240 was used until 2007, after which it was replaced by Caliber 79350. In 2020, IWC released a new iteration (Ref. IW371617) featuring a new in-house caliber 69355 that showcased similar architecture to the Valjoux. The successor also has slightly thicker pushers and a slightly slimmer case than the ‘90s original but is otherwise almost identical. IWC told Robb Report that Brown was wearing Ref. IW371617 at Monday’s premiere. Featuring a 41 mm steel case and a silver dial, the contemporary timepiece will set you back $9,350.

Zayn Malik: Rolex Day-Date
Zayn Malik has grown up a lot since his time in One Direction—I mean, just look at his watch. The British singer-songwriter, who is now embarking on a solo career, sported a classic Rolex Day-Date 40 at the SiriusXM Studios this week. Released in 1956, the Day-Date has become a status symbol synonymous with prestige, power, and success. Former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson famously wore a yellow-gold Day-Date while in office, for example. Priced at $43,000, Malik’s example (Ref. 228238) features a 40 mm yellow-gold case, a black dial with diamond hour markers, a fluted bezel, and a President bracelet. It also comes POTUS-approved.
-
Eddie Redmayne: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades
Considering Eddie Redmayne fronted the campaign for the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Shades, we expect him to be wearing the watch on the red carpet. And that he has. The British actor, who has been an Omega ambassador since 2016, wore the watch to the Met Gala earlier this month and again on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. This particular example features a 38 mm case in stainless steel, a sun-brushed sandstone dial fashioned from brass, and a steel bracelet with beautifully rounded links. As you might have picked up from Redmayne’s campaign, the dial of the Terra Shades is available in multiple hues, from terracotta to saffron. It costs a relatively modest $6,600, too.
