According to the latest buzz on social media, Reddit is reportedly in talks to integrate Worldcoin’s Orb, which is a blockchain-based human verification system. If true, this could be one of the major adoptions of decentralized identity verification by a major platform.

Neither Reddit nor Worldcoin has confirmed the buzz, but one can expect fireworks if a deal happens.

What is Worldcoin’s Orb

Worldcoin, co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, uses a futuristic-looking device called the “Orb” to scan users’ irises, creating a unique digital ID linked to their biometrics.

The idea is simple: prove you’re a real human, not a bot, and get verified on the blockchain. Reddit, which has long battled spam and fake accounts, may see this as a solution.

Worldcoin claims to maintain anonymity by converting users’ iris scans into a unique, irreversible numerical code (called an “IrisHash”) instead of storing actual biometric data.

This code is then linked to a decentralized digital identity on the blockchain, which allows verification without revealing personal details. Since the Orb does not store names, emails, or physical traits, the system ensures privacy by recording a cryptographic proof of humanity.

In a letter, Sam Altman writes, “If successful, we believe Worldcoin could drastically increase economic opportunity, scale a reliable solution for distinguishing humans from AI online while preserving privacy, enable global democratic processes, and eventually show a potential path to AI-funded UBI.”

Will Reddit Use Sam Altman’s Iris-Scanning Orb

Sources suggest that Reddit might integrate the Orb for user authentication, possibly for high-trust actions like moderating subreddits, posting in sensitive communities, or even voting on content. However, there is no official confirmation on this.

If implemented, this would be a big collaboration in bringing blockchain-based identity to mainstream social media. Unlike traditional logins, Worldcoin’s system doesn’t rely on emails or phone numbers; it just requires a one-time iris scan.

Proponents argue this could reduce fraud while protecting anonymity, since the Orb does not store personal data, just a cryptographic proof of humanity.

On the flip side, there is concern regarding the users’ privacy. Some experts warn that biometric verification, even if decentralized, sets a dangerous precedent. They also raised questions about what if the system gets compromised in the future.

Reddit has always walked a fine line between open discourse and moderation. If it adopts Worldcoin, it could set a new standard for online trust. It could also face massive backlash if things go south. The platform’s user base is famously resistant to changes that feel invasive, as in the past, the community has protested against a ban on subreddits.

Worldcoin, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny over its data collection practices, with regulators in Europe and Africa raising concerns.
