We caught up with Monica Walton, the founder of media company Vagabond Media Group, which produces content for multi-platform TV channel and travel brand This is Cayman – the official tourism channel in the Cayman Islands.
A native to the island, Monica is well placed to take viewers on a captivating journey across the destination, both on screen and off, with a focus on culture, food and entertainment.
From professional jetsetter, to award-winning filmmaker, she began her illustrious career as a TV reporter in the Cayman Islands, and has subsequently built up an impressive international travel brand that transcends her humble island beginnings.
My car of choice
A Jeep, always. For island life you can’t beat a 4×4. They’re rugged, reliable and versatile and great at navigating tricky landscapes; winding coastal roads, steep hills, muddy tracks. They’re a good choice for a rental car too and the brand embodies freedom and independence, which I love. There’s a ton of space in the back too for a baby seat, toys, and for me, a dog too.
My favourite holiday destination
Tokyo is a definite bucket list destination – mainly for the sushi. The next destination we’re planning on visiting is New York for a wedding near the Hamptons. It’s a beach destination, so I already know I’ll love it! I’ve heard it’s low-key and slow-paced, which is what we’re used to in the Cayman Islands, but it has that vibrancy and style too.
My gadget I can’t live without
My iPhone (annoyingly) runs my life. I have way too many apps on there; business-related, banking, WhatsApp group chats, and everything from Uber Eats to a swarm of nursery rhyme apps for desperate plane journeys with a toddler! I’m definitely a mess without my phone. When travelling, a gadget I can’t live without is definitely a camera or my drone. The DJI Mavic Mini/Air is a great choice.
My go to fashion brand
For designer-wear I love British brands like Barbour, Burberry and Ralph Lauren. For everyday wear Zara is always a go-to for affordable but stylish. I’ve been living in activewear lately as it’s easy to throw on, Lululemon or Alo are favourites. I also get a lot of health and self-care items as well as comfortable and casual clothes on laluzthebrand.com too.
My airline of choice
I find that Emirates is a cut above the rest, and the flights are seamless. I usually fly British Airways between London and the Cayman Islands and they’re customer service is good, the seats are spacious, so no complaints! Cayman Airways, the national carrier in the Cayman Islands always does a remarkable job too.
My favourite watch brand
The Apple watch is so helpful as a working mum and business owner. It (again) organises my life and helps me keep track of schedules, health and fitness. For something when you’re going out, or for an occasion, you can’t beat Cartier. Classy and chic!
My favourite restaurant
Bluebird Café in Chelsea is a favourite for casual lunches, business meetings, or happy hour. It’s family friendly, just down the road from us and their patio is lush. If you’re there, order the arancini – so good!
My guilty pleasure
True crime documentaries are always a big distraction and guilty pleasure. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all of them on Netflix. Maybe more than once! Other than that, a long hot bath, wine, a bit of alone time and a good book on a Friday night is everything.
My favourite way to give back
When I can, the best way to give back is with my time. I like to work with charities and offer my services pro-bono where I can, or volunteer to do something in-person rather than just a financial contribution. It’s good for the soul, and a great way to give back.
