The ultimate hack, says Wong, is simply to pop a trench over your leggings and T-shirt. “Honestly, outerwear is a godsend. As long as the weather allows, pop on a lightweight trench or oversize bomber. You’ll instantly look better.”
Accessories also make every outfit sing. Jewellery can be tricky with small hands, but denim shorts and a tee look infinitely more polished when you add a belt. Shoes, too, are a game-changer. There is no shortage of sneakers to amp up your style and, as we head into summer, a pair of stylish sandals will help, too.
If you’re heading back to work or have a more formal occasion to dress for, heed the advice of fashion designer Rebecca Vallance – mum to two young boys and someone who exudes a kind of elegance I can only dream of.
Knit dresses, like this Rebecca Vallance Ruby midi, are a comfy classic.
“I actually think adopting a uniform is very smart,” says Vallance of the early days of motherhood. “It takes the hassle out of dressing. You have enough going on!”
She points to her Rebecca Vallance Essentials range for office-appropriate pieces, which can be changed up with a different tee or blouse. “Well-tailored basics like wide-leg pants, a knitted tank and a blazer can be worn with sandals or heels and can make you feel together, even when you’re running on empty.”
She also suggests knit dresses, which look great even if your size is still fluctuating. “Knits are comfortable and chic,” says Vallance. “And don’t be afraid to dress up. Never underestimate the power of taking it up a notch, especially on days when you’d rather not. Dressing well can really improve your mood and make you feel better.
“Don’t save your wardrobe for special occasions. It’s there to wear.”
