The ubiquity of smart apps like Zelle and Apple Pay can make wealth seem ethereal, mere numbers passed from one screen to another. But riches come in many forms − sometimes even solid gold.
The public was reminded of that this week with the announcement that more than $100,000 in gold bars were found at Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J.
Menendez and his wife Nadine Arslanian Menendez have been indicted and charged with corruption for allegedly accepting bribes in the form of cash, gold, mortgage payments and a Mercedes-Benz. The indictment and charges come in connection to a “corrupt relationship with three New Jersey businessmen,” according to a statement from the U.S. attorney in New York.
Here’s everything you need to know about the monetary and weight equivalent of a bar of gold.
How much is a kilo of gold?
A kilogram of gold is worth about $62,000 today, according to live price tracking site Goldprice.org. A kilogram of silver is worth about $760.
More than $100,000 in gold bars were found at Menendez’s home, according to the indictment. In March 2022, Nadine Menendez sold two, one-kilogram bars to a jeweler. At today’s current price, that would equal about $124,000.
