‘My mother-in-law keeps buying designer clothes for our newborn – can I ask for nappies instead?’

I emphasise the word modest. As a financial planner, I have seen the downside of very large Junior Isa balances becoming available overnight to an 18-year-old who happens to be going through an expensive phase.

Compound returns are wonderful. So is moderation. A sensible nest egg, coupled with the opportunity for a young adult to decide how best to use it, can be a far greater gift than a wardrobe full of designer baby clothes.

I do wonder, from your description, whether moderation comes naturally to your mother-in-law. If she enjoys going all in, today’s designer baby grows could easily become tomorrow’s over-funded investment account. The principle is the same. A good gift should reflect the needs of the recipient rather than simply the enthusiasm of the giver.

The temptation is to keep smiling politely while your spare bedroom slowly transforms into a luxury baby boutique. I don’t recommend that approach. Resentments grow surprisingly well in cupboards stuffed with unopened toys.

You and your partner are now the people who make the rules for your family. Nobody hands you a certificate giving you permission. One day you simply realise that you are no longer one of the children. You are the adults now. That can feel surprisingly uncomfortable when the person you need to establish boundaries with is someone who has spent decades being the family matriarch.

Fortunately, boundaries do not have to become battles. The kindest boundaries are often the clearest ones.

The next time she arrives carrying several shopping bags, thank her warmly and gently redirect her enthusiasm. Tell her how much you appreciate her generosity but explain that space is becoming a challenge. Suggest practical alternatives such as nappies, books or a modest contribution towards your daughter’s future.

Most grandparents would much rather know what is genuinely useful than unknowingly create stress.

If she ignores your request, don’t panic. Once a gift has been given, it belongs to the recipient, not the giver. You are perfectly entitled to donate it, give it to someone else or quietly decide it isn’t right for your family. There is no need to feel guilty.

Your daughter is unlikely to remember whether she wore designer labels at six months old. She will remember, years from now, how the adults around her treated one another. A warm relationship between her parents and grandparents will always be worth more than a wardrobe of expensive clothes.

Accept the love. Redirect the spending. And remember that becoming a parent also means becoming your family’s boundary keeper. Grandparents are a blessing, but parents make the rules. It is one of the first lessons of parenthood, and I suspect it won’t be the last.

All the best,

– Sam
