Key Takeaways
- The upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door EV draws inspiration from the Vision AMG concept unveiled in May 2022.
- Vision AMG showcases extreme yet spectacular proportions with features like star headlights and three round taillights.
- Although the AMG GT 4-door EV prototype has toned down some design elements, it retains the A-pillars and round taillights.
Mercedes-Benz isn’t new to electric cars, but the German carmaker is still seeking its first-ever electric sports car at its AMG division, which will come in the form of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door EV.
Interestingly, HotCars recently obtained images of the AMG GT 4-door EV on the road, courtesy of photographer Brian Williams. Based on these images, it appears that elements of the nearly two-year-old Vision AMG concept are influencing the design
Vision AMG A Show Car Previewing AMG’s Electric Future
Vision AMG Was Expected To Influence Future AMG EVs
- Mercedes revealed Vision AMG concept in May 2022
- The design concept is defined by extreme yet spectacular proportions
- Design study represented next logical step for AMG’s new electric sports car
- Vision AMG sits on new AMG.EA platform with Axial Flux Motors as its core
If there’s a car that would influence the design of the AMG GT 4-door EV, it would be the Vision AMG concept. The reason this concept, a show car revealed by Mercedes in May 2022, would exert such influence lies in the fact that Mercedes reiterated that this extraordinary show car offers a glimpse of the all-electric future of AMG Driving Performance.
Mercedes described the Vision AMG as showcasing what electrification could look like at AMG while remaining faithful to the brand’s aesthetic. The concept, especially its proportions, embodies an interplay between beauty and the extraordinary. The Vision AMG is defined by extreme yet spectacular proportions, characterized by a long wheelbase, short overhangs, powerful shoulders, and large wheels.
The Vision AMG study actually builds on the VISION EQXX concept, offering the next logical step for a production EV sports car. As announced, the Vision AMG sits on the new AMG.EA platform and is powered by an Axial Flux Motor backed by a dedicated high-performance high-voltage battery and revolutionary drive technology.

The Vision EQXX has broken the 740-mile range barrier, but it has more to offer as it stands already. We explain why.
Vision AMG Concept: A Study Of Future AMG EV Design
Vision AMG Has Several Distinct Styling Elements To Watch Out For
- Vision AMG Concept featured an AMG grille despite absence of radiator
- Closed off grille was the car’s visual focal point
- Mercedes star headlights offer new front lighting signature
- Three round taillights marked the concept on each side
When Mercedes unveiled the Vision AMG concept, it showcased some very distinct design elements. These include the closed-off AMG grille with illuminated bars and the extraordinary star-shaped light signature. Although an all-electric drivetrain doesn’t require a traditional radiator at the front, the Vision AMG retained this distinctive brand feature.
Fully integrated into the front end, the closed-off AMG grille serves as the car’s visual focal point, with its appearance enhanced by illuminated bars and a three-dimensional exterior contour. The three-pointed star sits prominently on the hood.
Meanwhile, the Vision AMG features three LED elements forming a stylized, three-dimensional Mercedes star. A horizontal band of light running above the grille visually connects the two headlamps. On the rear section, the light design is characterized by three round lights on each side, with LED rings positioned in cylindrical tubes. Since Vision AMG is a look into the future, upcoming AMG electric cars should take some cues from it.

Vision AMG Elements Found On AMG GT 4-Door EV
AMG GT 4-Door EV Carry Some Semblance To Vision AMG
- Mercedes toned down the drastic design for the AMG GT 4-Door EV
- Some characteristic elements are nowhere to be found
- AMG GT 4-Door EV did retain the A-pillars, flowing roof and round taillights
- Too early to tell if other concept elements would make it into the new car
As seen in the spy shots, the heavily camouflaged AMG GT 4-door EV prototype does bear some styling resemblance to the Vision AMG. However, the camouflaged prototype appears to have toned down the more extreme design and styling elements of the Vision AMG, which had us excited for performance EVs. Almost absent are the concept’s long wheelbase, short front overhang, slightly longer rear overhang, widely flared wheel arches, muscular rear shoulders, and sharply angled tear-off edge at the rear.
Nevertheless, the camouflaged AMG GT 4-door EV prototype retains the forward-positioned A-pillar and a roof flowing directly to the rear. Since the spied AMG model was a camouflaged prototype, it’s too early to determine if it will feature the more distinct elements of the Vision AMG, such as the Mercedes star headlights and the closed-off AMG grille. However, the AMG GT 4-door EV prototype does have three round tail lights on each side.
