Many celebrities have posted congratulatory messages for Yarraji, whereas her event, women’s 100m hurdles, is set to begin on September 30.
Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle Tuesday took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a video of hurdler Jyothi Yarraji claiming she won India’s third gold medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou. While Yarraji’s event, the women’s 100m hurdles is set to begin on September 30, many celebrities like Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman also fell prey to the inaccurate tweet and began congratulating the 24-year-old hurdler from Andhra Pradesh.
“Heartiest congratulations to Yaraaji from Andhra Pradesh for winning the Gold for 100mts hurdles at the Asian Games,” Bhosle posted with a video that was recorded earlier this year. That video is from July 14 when Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Athletics Championships, which was her maiden finish at the top of a podium in a major international event.

“This gold medal is true testament that dreams come true irrespective of circumstances. Way to go Jyothi Yaraaji,” Gambhir posted on X along with a photo of the athlete.
Laxman shared the same video as Bhosle and wrote in the caption, “Where there is a will, There is a Way. Father a Security Guard and Mother a sweeper. India’s first Women’s Gold medal at Asian Athletics Championship in 100mtr hurdles, Meet Yaraaji from Andhra. Great show!!!! Congratulations!” However, Laxman appears to have deleted the tweet now.

Yarraji travelled to Hangzhou only on Tuesday, as evidenced by her coach James Hillier posting an image of Yarraji, himself and Amlan Borgohain (the country’s fastest man) with the caption: “En route to Hangzhou for the Asian Games.”
The Reliance Foundation Youth Sports handle also debunked the fake news.
“We know Jyothi Yarraji is fast but she’s still on her way to Hangzhou for the Asian Games and will be competing on 30th Sep. The clip that has been circulating is from her Gold Medal winning race at the Asian Athletics Championships in Thailand in July. We’re sure she’ll be delighted with all the wishes and we encourage you to join us in manifesting another medal-winning performance at the Asian Games soon!” it wrote on X.
Yarraji, born on August 28, 1999, in Visakhapatnam, grew up with limited means. Her father, Suryanarayana, works as a private security guard while her mother, Kumari, is a domestic help who works as a part-time cleaner in a city hospital.
