The cost of manufacturing batteries for electric cars isn’t exactly on the low side. In fact, just back in 2019, it would cost as much as $170 per kWh. Prices in 2024 will reportedly drop to as low as $120 per kWh according to Goldman Sachs, but this high cost of battery manufacturing is exactly why most EVs were initially out of reach of the average consumer and why there still aren’t a large number of affordable EVs on the market today. Of course, EVs are becoming more and more affordable, with even brands like Tesla dropping prices significantly, but the bulk of EVs on the road today live beyond that affordable price bracket.

With all of that said, the high cost of EV battery manufacturing has led to jump-starting the luxury EV market. When automakers mix high-cost batteries with luxury, there’s some room for profit, and there’s no shortage of high-end EVs to choose from today. If you’re in the market for the best of the best, you can go with something like the BMW i7, for example, or the Mercedes EQS (in sedan or SUV form). Polestar, Porsche, Audi, and even American brands like Cadillac exist in this space as well.

But, this raises a huge question: with so many luxury electric cars on the market, which one is the best, and which gives you the best bang for your buck? The following models are the best on the market today.

To give you the most up-to-date information possible, all data in this list has been compiled from the personal experience of TopSpeed stand and various automakers. The following models are ranged by the starting MSRPs from the cheapest to the most expensive.

1 2024 Cadillac Lyriq: The Electric Cadillac You Didn’t Know You Wanted

Price Range: $58,590 – $63,190

Cadillac introduced the Lyriq back in 2022 as its first fully electric vehicle and GM’s first production vehicle using the BEV3 platform. Offered in three different trims and both RWD and AWD configurations, the Lyriq is priced anywhere from $63,190 to $74,590.

The Lyriq is defined not only by a distinctive exterior styling, but also by a luxurious and comfortable interior, with high-quality materials and plenty of space. The most notable feature of the interior is the 33.0-inch curved advanced LED touchscreen, but you also get leather seats with cool stitching, lots of fancy materials, and wood inserts on the doors and dashboard, all combined with all the latest technologies and safety features.

In its best configuration, the Lyriq is also a very performant luxury EV, with up to 500 horsepower under the hood and a sprint time of only 4.6 seconds. The single-motor Lyriq can travel up to 314 miles, and all models benefit from fast-charging capabilities.

2 2024 BMW i5: M5 Levels Of Performance… Almost

Price Range: $66,800 – $84,100

The BMW i5 is a more compact, cheaper variant of the i7. It will, of course, not offer the same level of luxury, since it is almost half the price – $66,800 – but it is still luxurious at its core. You get a large panoramic roof, an integrated 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch infotainment display screen, high-quality materials, and wood and carbon fiber inserts.

In the U.S., you get to choose between two different models: i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60. While both deliver decent performance figures, the way to go is the M60 if you want raw performance. It will never replace the M5 sports sedan, but it comes with 590 horsepower and runs from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. With a range of up to 295 miles, the i5 is a little bit more efficient than its Audi and Mercedes competitors, but significantly less efficient than a Model S.

In base trims, the EQE delivers up from 288 horsepower, but if you are willing to pay $106,900 you can opt for the AMG EQE which will take you from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and give you up to 617 horsepower. With power ranging from 480 to 1,111 horsepower, and a range going up to as much as 481 miles, the Air is the new must-have of the electric market. Those opting for the Sapphire trim will also get supercar-like performance figures, with the 0 to 60 mph sprint time going down to 1.89 seconds.

Currently offered in both pick-up and SUV body styles, the GMC Hummer EV first wowed the world in 2020. With a total weight of up to 10,000 pounds, the EV completely changed the way we’ve looked at Hummer. With three trims to choose from and prices starting from $97,175, the Hummer EV can be had with up to three motors and up to 1,000 horsepower. It can run from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and is able to handle a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds.

Both the truck and the SUV offer a very luxurious cabin with elements inspired by NASA and plenty of interior room. There are three different trims to choose from with prices ranging from $104,400 to $131,740, plus the Maybach EQS SUV priced at $179,900 – a luxury electric SUV that forever changed the way we look at luxury SUVs.

The EQS SUV is not only a very luxurious electric SUV, but it is also very powerful – with the base EQS going up to 536 horsepower, and the Maybach model up to 649 horsepower. It’s also very fast for its size. You can do 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds in the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV and 4.1 seconds for the Maybach EQS 680 SUV. Range however is not the best, with the most efficient model being only good for 305 miles.

9 2024 Mercedes EQS: The Perfect Blend Of Efficiency And Luxury

Price Range: $104,400 – $147,550

Launched in 2021, the EQS was Mercedes-Benz’s first EQ model built on the company’s new MEA platform. Not only is the EQS defined by the specific Mercedes luxury, but at the moment of its introduction, it was the most aerodynamic car in production with a coefficient drag of 0.20. On the U.S. market, the EQS is offered in four different trim levels, with prices ranging from $104,400 to $147,550.

Just like 90-percent of the automakers out there, Audi is also a new player in the electric market. Only the company’s third electric model, the e-tron GT, was announced in 2021, with an RS version added a few months later. For the 2024 model year, there are three trims to choose from with prices ranging from $106,500 to $147,100.

The E-tron GT is built on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan, and, just like its German counterpart, it delivers supercar-like performance figures. In the RS trim, the 0 to 60 mph sprint is done in only 3.1 seconds, although that’s not quite as fast as the Taycan Turbo which only needs 2.6 seconds. Of course, you do not buy the e-tron GT for its performance figures, but for its amazing luxury features. 11 2024 Lotus Eletre: A British Electric Super SUV With Impressive Power And Performance

Announced back in March 2022, the Lotus Eletre is one of the most awaited luxury EVs at the moment. It is set to go on sale in 2024 at an estimated price of $115,000. It may not be Lotus’ first electric car, but it is its first production SUV and promises supercar-like performance figures. The Eletre R – with its combined 905 horsepower runs from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.95 seconds – may not be as fast as the Evija, but it is faster than 99 percent of its direct competitors.

There are three models to choose from, with prices ranging from $124,200 to $168,500. The M70 is the way to go if you are also expecting supercar-like performance figures. With 650 horsepower on tap, the i7 M70 takes you from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds. The i7 is also an efficient electric vehicle and can travel up to 318 miles on a single charge.

The model is not only the perfect blend of luxury and technology, but it also promises up to 750 horsepower. Cadillac also promises a range of about 450 miles and the possibility to add up to 100 miles of range in a mere 10 minutes.

The Escalade IQ’s cabin is the epitome of modern luxury, with the coolest feature being of course its huge 55-inch curved display loaded with a plethora of entertainment and connectivity features. Launched as Porsche’s first series production electric car, the Taycan took the world by storm. It doesn’t really have a turbo, but the performance says otherwise.

Set to be built on a lightweight aluminum architecture, the future luxury electric four-door GT is set to offer enhanced driving dynamics, a stable and responsive driving experience, and supercar-like performance figures.
