No one teases their fans quite like BMW.
In recent years, loyalists have complained that the brand’s signature 2-kidney grille has grown too large on many designs. You might expect designers to shrink it. But on the upcoming replacement for the X2 small SUV, they’ve outlined it in lights so you can’t look away.
The X2 is an odd vehicle. BMW pioneered the practice of building two versions of an SUV – one more practical, one sportier — in 2008 when it released both the boxier X5 and sloped-backed X6 midsize SUVs. It followed that up with smaller siblings, the more practical X1 and the sportier “SUV coupe” X2.
The X1 was redesigned for the 2023 model year, and the X2 is overdue for a similar update. BMW began teasing the 2025 version with a video posted to Facebook. It shows a heavily shadowed version of the 2025 X2 under the headline “coming soon.” In profile, it keeps its sleek, tall coupe styling with a prominent rear lip spoiler.
When the camera rotates to show the front of the SUV, bright lines of LEDs illuminate, outlining a large pair of octagonal kidneys, much like those found on the current XM.
That’s all the information anyone has about the next X2 so far. We expect it to stay mechanically almost identical to the new X1, which likely means a 241-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter in the base model with a 312-hp upgrade available.
