Just after 3pm (AEST), the BoM issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the northern Gold Coast area, as fast-moving storms rapidly developed.
The storms moved through the area quickly, but not before large hail and extremely heavy rain were reported over a brief but furious few minutes.
A second major storm crossed the southern part of the Gold Coast shortly afterwards.
Gold Coast locals captured images of the hail, which was said by some to be “tennis-ball sized”.
Supercell storms form through a combination of heat and atmospheric instability, and all the elements were in place this Friday afternoon.
That’s why the BoM put the words ”This thunderstorm is very dangerous” on its warning image.
At this stage, there are no reports of property damage.
Even the Gold Coast Suns AFL team admitted that sun is not the only type of weather on the Gold Coast.
