Ever since the Lexus GX debuted in 2002, it has been one of the best luxury SUVs. Gearheads have always loved its imposing design, power, luxury amenities, and reliability. However, since the second-generation GX celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2019, gearheads have been begging Lexus to build a new generation so that the GX can remain competitive against its more modern rivals. It took a while, but Lexus finally unveiled a new generation in 2024.

The previous generations of the GX set incredibly high standards for mid-size luxury SUVs, and from the looks of things, the 2024 Lexus GX meets and exceeds them. The new GX offers a compelling all-round package that Lexus hopes will get it on the list of the best SUVs in 2024, whether you’re looking for space, luxury, performance, or off-road prowess. Let’s explore some interesting facts about the new 2024 Lexus GX and some of the reasons why we think it deserves your consideration.

With an all-new boxy look, the 2024 Lexus GX returns featuring more off-road prowess than ever with modern technology and amenities.

10 The 2024 Lexus GX Uses Toyota’s New TNGA-F Platform

A few years ago, Toyota introduced the Toyota New Global Architecture-F (TNGA-F) platform. This new platform underpins Toyota’s current and upcoming body-on-frame SUVs and pickup trucks and is used in vehicles like the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Tundra, Toyota Sequoia, and Lexus LX. The new 2024 GX also adopts this new platform.

Body-on-frame platforms are becoming increasingly hard to find in SUVs, especially luxury-oriented ones such as the GX. However, since Lexus wants the GX to be a do-it-all luxury SUV, the body-on-frame platform is perfect as it allows it to handle tough off-road situations and also provides greater towing capacity.

9 The 2024 Lexus GX Has An Updated Design

Even though the second-generation Lexus GX received a major facelift in 2013, it still had a dated design by 2023 standards in many gearheads’ eyes and desperately needed a refresh. Many also had a problem with the redesigned 2013 GX’s looks, particularly the front end as it had one of the biggest front grilles. Thankfully, Lexus has fixed that with the new GX, as it looks superb.

The 2024 GX has a new boxy, rugged design inspired by the new Toyota Land Cruiser. According to Lexus, the new design is meant to appeal to people looking for “the premium off-roader” as it not only makes it look at home in rough off-road environments but is also meticulously designed to enhance off-road visibility from every angle. The front-end design has improved and features new low-profile triple-beam LED headlights flanking a redesigned front grille that’s smaller than the last generation and less conspicuous.

While the GX is a luxury SUV at its core, Lexus wants the new generation to appeal to gearheads who love the great outdoors, which is why it offers six different 2024 Lexus GX trims grouped into three classes – Premium, Luxury, and Overtrail. All trims have the same engine but have several differences to appeal to different types of buyers.

The ‘entry-level’ trim is the Premium. In the Premium, you get all the bells and whistles of a proper luxury SUV with a bit of off-road capability mixed in. It has a spacious cabin with comfortable seating for up to seven passengers, elegant NuLuxe leatherette upholstery, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, and a powerful Lexus 10-speaker audio system. The Premium+ takes things up a notch by adding power-folding third-row seats to replace the manual-folding seats in the Premium trim, heated second-row seats, thematic ambient lighting, LED fog lamps, and the Lexus Memory System.

For those interested in the finer things, Lexus offers the Luxury and Luxury+ trims. The Luxury Trim features upgrades like 10-way power-adjustable front seats, massaging front seats, illuminated door sills, premium semi-aniline leather upholstery, 22-inch alloy wheels, and more. The Luxury+ model is the most expensive trim and offers many upscale features to justify its price, including a digital rearview mirror, automatic power-extending running boards, adaptive variable suspension, and a premium 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

Lastly, we have the off-road-oriented Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims. The Overtrail is expected to rival some of the best off-road SUVs on the market and offer features like 33-inch all-terrain tires, multi-terrain select, downhill assist control, crawl control, and more. The Overtrail+ builds on the Overtrail’s off-road features but adds luxury amenities like front massaging seats and heated second-row seats to make off-road trips more comfortable.

One of the biggest changes in the new Lexus GX is under the hood, as it has a new engine. Thanks to the fight against climate change, the auto industry is shifting towards smaller engines aided by forced induction, and Lexus doesn’t want to be left behind. The old GX’s massive 301-hp 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine has been replaced by a new 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 generating 349 ponies and 479 lb-ft of torque, a noticeable increase in power over the previous generation. This engine is paired with a standard 10-speed automatic transmission system, ensuring smooth delivery of power to all four wheels.

For gearheads looking for a bit more fuel efficiency, Lexus announced that a hybrid version is in the works and will debut later in the US. We’ll keep you updated when the automaker releases key details.

A big theme with the 2024 Lexus is its rugged, off-road-oriented looks. However, it’s still a Lexus product, and anyone who buys a Lexus will expect the interior to have some luxury amenities. Thankfully, the 2024 GX doesn’t disappoint as it has one of the best luxury car interiors you can get.

The base model offers a bit of luxury, including synthetic leather upholstery, ambient lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, a moonroof, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and more. However, if you want a Range-Rover-rivaling interior, the Luxury+ trim is the one to get. The Luxury+ has upscale features like semi-aniline leather upholstery, massaging front seats, thematic ambient lighting, a coolbox, automatic power-extending running boards, the Dynamic Sky panorama glass roof and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

However, with the new GX, Lexus is looking to compete with some of the most unstoppable off-roaders on the market. For starters, the new GX has a rugged boxy design that not only matches off-road environments but also enhances off-road visibility from every angle.

While the 2024 GX’s starting price is similar to that of mid-size luxury SUV rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, it offers more capability and features, particularly for gearheads who like taking off-road trips.
