Inside the Rolex-Designed Oscars Greenroom for Stars on the Big Night

Rolex has overseen the design of its eponymous greenroom at the Oscars since 2016, but for Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, the high-wattage Swiss watch brand has leaned in on the concept of calm and relaxation for the presenters and nominees (and, soon enough, winners) who will enjoy the space before and after their moments in the spotlight.

That idea starts with a stunning palette of tonal greens, roundly agreed by color experts to be the essential hues that inspire thoughts of serenity and tranquility. This immersive space backstage at the Dolby Theatre also puts sustainability front and center via the use of responsibly sourced materials that include ceramic, glass and natural fibers. Via these colors and elements, Rolex noted in a press statement that the desire is to create a “vegetal world” intended to transcend “mere tribute to the chromatic identity of the brand, it is a celebration of nature.”

Surrounding the variety of seating areas designed for conversation is also an elegant motif derived from fans, likewise a source of inspiration for their calming aspect — yet if guests welcomed into the room look closely, they’ll also notice that those fans and other pleated details resemble the fluted bezel on a Rolex watch.

Indeed, not unlike Ryan Gosling, Lily Gladstone, Emily Blunt and other stratospheric Oscar-night stars in attendance this year, a Rolex timepiece also enjoys prime placement at one end of the greenroom; this year the watch on display is an Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 in 18-karat Everose gold (the brand’s proprietary rose-gold metal) with an ombre slate dial on the brand’s iconic President bracelet.

Fold in the greenery and floral arrangements, and it’s ultimately a nature-driven vibe that takes center stage throughout the room. “The concept integrates essential elements from nature – organic structures and chlorophyll – and aims to create harmony between them through a chromatic universe,” the press statement notes. “The shapes within this vegetal universe recall details such as the fluting on watch bezels and the brushed metal surfaces of watch dials, transmitting their luminous vibrations.”

In addition to its longtime sponsorship of the Academy Awards greenroom, Rolex likewise enjoys a venerable history with cinema partnerships, from projects with Martin Scorsese and James Cameron to its ongoing support of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences; the latter extends beyond the Oscars to include the watchmaker’s status as a founding supporter of the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. Rolex also sponsors Scorsese’s Film Foundation, which to date has funded the restoration of more than 1,000 movies, and also funds the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative in the fields of film, dance, literature, architecture, music and theater.

As for watch spotting on the Academy Awards red carpet, be on the lookout for stars rocking their own timepieces, as Rolex famously does not gift or lend its horological mechanisms for events. Last year, sharp-eyed watch lovers noted that both Ryan Seacrest and Mark Consuelos attended the Oscars with their own Rolex Daytonas on their wrists.
