The post of the Maharashtra council chairperson is vacant at present after the end of the tenure of former chairman Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar of the Nationalist Congress Party.
The Maharashtra government is planning to construct 12 luxury sea-view apartments, each 6,500 square feet, in south Mumbai by razing the Ajantha bungalow on the Narayan Dabholkar Road. The structure is presently being used as the residence of the Maharashtra council chairperson.

Out of the 12 apartments, six will be used to accommodate the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the state legislative assembly, Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the legislative council and leaders of Opposition of both the Assembly and the council. The rest of the six will be used to host state guests and dignitaries.

According to sources in the legislature, the proposal is in the planning stage and a decision on the implementing agency will soon be taken. The government is undecided on whether to carry out the project through the Public Works Department or the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).
Notably, Shiv Sena’s Neelam Gorhe is currently the deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra council. BJP’S Rahul Narvekar is the assembly speaker while Narhari Zirwal of the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP is the deputy speaker.
Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar is the leader of Opposition in the legislative assembly while Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve is the Opposition leader in legislative council.
