Of all the things you might expect to come across in a car garage, half of a Ferrari isn’t topping the list.

Even finding an intact one would be quite exceptional.

But one YouTuber – Effspot – came across a Ferrari that was cut straight down the middle in a Los Angeles car park, and was naturally curious about its backstory.

Because – well – you would be, right?

Why was this Ferrari split in half?

This is a Ferrari Mondial, first produced in 1981.

Inside the half-car is a tablet-like screen, whilst a plastic box in the rear holds a PlayStation.

There’s also a DVD player – all in all, quite a few additions for a car that’s missing half its body.

Only the driver’s seat and one of the backseats remain in place. The steering wheel remains in place.

Over the years, many theories have emerged to explain how this Ferrari ended up split down the middle.

One story maintains that the original owner, who was a car dealer, chopped it in two and displayed it in his showroom to entertain the children of customers.

It also made an appearance in one of the Cannonball Run films, starring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, and Jackie Chan.

In this story, the director Hal Needham opted to cut a real car in half for a stunt rather than getting a mockup.

And then, there were jokes that the car was split in a divorce as the owner’s wife got literally half of everything.

That last one isn’t as likely, you’d have to imagine.

It’s not clear what happened to the other half, and we may never know.

Even if it were somehow glued back together, there is very little chance of it returning to the roads.

The Ferrari Mondial’s backstory

When it was first released in 1981, the Mondial wasn’t well received.

It was deemed to be unattractive and many felt it didn’t uphold what Ferrari stood for.

Due to the additional seats in the rear, it was too heavy and lacked the power of a sports car.

As such, it is now the most affordable classic Ferrari in the used car market – should you want to pick one up for yourself.

Hey, it’s still got a Ferrari badge on it, right?
