Forget the stereotypical image of celebrities splurging on designer clothes. Mrunal Thakur, the actor who stole hearts in Telugu blockbusters Sita Ramam and Hi Nana, is pushing the envelope with her opinion on buying designer clothing.

In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Mrunal shared her unique perspective on celebrity fashion. She believes it’s wasteful to spend exorbitant amounts on clothes that rarely get re-worn. “You are not going to wear them again,” she said. Interestingly, she also revealed that the clothes she wore for the interview itself were borrowed — as is the norm but rarely known by the public.

“These are not my clothes, I have just sourced them. The maximum money I have spent on a top is Rs 2000. That also I feel is too much,” she stated.

Mrunal prioritises experiences and investments that hold lasting value. “Yes, having a classic statement collection in your wardrobe is good but wearing a brand for the heck of it is a waste of money. I would rather invest that money in food, in some plants, a house, or a land where I can do farming,” she added.

Mrunal’s statements have made us wonder; what is it that makes designer clothes expensive — the material, the construction, or the name of the designer? We talked to an expert about it.

Designer garments are the culmination of meticulous craftsmanship, premium materials, and innovative design. Each piece undergoes a painstaking process, from conception to creation, involving highly skilled artisans and advanced techniques, explained Pankaj Arora, associate professor, School of fashion, World University of Design.

“Luxury designers prioritise quality over quantity, ensuring every stitch, seam, and detail meets the highest standards. The exclusivity of designer labels adds to their allure, as they offer unique designs and limited editions that cannot be replicated by mass-produced alternatives,” he told indianexpress.com in an interaction.

Can a small-time designer provide the same product at a lesser price point?

Arora noted that established designers often have access to premium materials and exclusive fabrics that may not be readily available to smaller designers. Also, big designers typically have larger budgets, allowing them to invest in cutting-edge technology and top-tier talent, skilled artisans, and professionals with invaluable experience and expertise, resulting in superior craftsmanship and innovation.

However, this isn’t to say that smaller designers cannot produce high-quality garments, Arora added. With dedication, creativity, and attention to detail, small-time designers can certainly create exceptional pieces.

Should you invest in a designer piece?

Investing in designer clothes transcends mere fashion, according to Arora; it’s about investing in timeless elegance, impeccable quality, and the essence of luxury.

“While the initial cost may seem high, the longevity of designer garments justifies the expense. These pieces are crafted to withstand the test of time, both in terms of durability and style, making them sustainable choices in a world increasingly focused on ethical consumption,” he said.

Moreover, the unparalleled craftsmanship and attention to detail ensure that each purchase is an investment in artistry and sophistication. Ultimately, buying designer clothes is not just about acquiring a garment but also about owning a piece of history, culture, and exquisite craftsmanship.
