New Delhi: Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who died of heart attack last night at Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda, had a penchant for luxury cars and guns.
As per reports, the five-time MLA owned a fleet of expensive cars bearing registration numbers ending with ‘786’, the digits are considered holy by Muslims which mean ‘Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim’, which means in the name of God, the merciful and compassionate in Arabic.

In the late 80s, by the time he entered the world of crime, Ansari already had a fleet of luxury vehicles including prestigious models of the Maruti Gypsy, Tata Safari, Ford Endeavour, Pajero Sport, Audi, and BMW.
In 1986, when Mukhtar Ansari was released out of jail in connection with the murder of contractor Sachchidanand Rai, he was reportedly welcomed outside the prison by his aides with a fleet of luxury vehicles, each of them displaying license plates ending with ‘786’. It is said that Ansari had six Tata Safaris and a white open-top Gypsy, all bearing ‘786’ endings on their plates.
Mukhtar’s unfulfilled wish to own Hummer SUV
Mukhtar Ansari, despite being in jail, always wished to have a Hummer SUV in his fleet of luxury cars back home, but his desire remained unfulfilled after his death last night.
Not only Mukhtar, his wife Afsa and both sons – Abbas and Umar – too own several high-end luxury vehicles. Afsa reportedly owned cars like Audi, Mercedes and BMW. Her sons had a Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavor and BMW. As the law caught up with the family and Ansari was jailed in 2005, most of these vehicles have been reportedly impounded by the probe agencies as they were found to be benami

As per his affidavit ahead of 2017 Assembly elections, the Ansari family owned weapons like an NP bore revolver, a shotgun, and rifles among other arms totalling Rs 27.50 lakh.
The 63-year-old Mukhtar Ansari was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar. He had been behind bars in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005. He had over 60 criminal cases pending against him. He was sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 by different courts in Uttar Pradesh and was lodged in the Banda jail.
His name was on the list of 66 gangsters issued by Uttar Pradesh Police last year.
