Red Bull Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey has revealed that alongside building championship winning cars, the Brit has been building a yacht as a past time. Something he has claimed “exercised his engineering brain”.
Newey takes to the sea
Adrian Newey, who has won 12 Constructors’ Championships and designed the winning car in over 200 races in Formula One, has decided to step into the unknown, as a new documentary is set to be released, giving an insight into the mind of a Formula One mastermind’s life away from the track.
Newey’s new 90-foot Oyster 885 sailing yacht is expected to be capable of circumnavigating the world. The former McLaren engineer has admitted that building a boat is more for “pleasure”, whereas his day job is for “performance”. However, there is no hiding from the fact that designing a vessel capable of going 14mph is very different from creating a car capable of speeding upwards of 200mph.
“We are tailoring an existing design, but it’s for a very different outcome,” Newey said.
“For what we want, which is a boat which is genuinely a blue water cruiser, we could go on cruises, then possibly around the world.
“The beauty about motor racing is that there’s only two things that count – how quick it is and whether it’s reliable or not. Building a live-aboard sailing yacht is much more subjective in terms of the overall pleasure versus performance and usability.”
Super yachts and Formula One
Large yachts are not an unusual sight in the world of motorsport, as many of these luxury water mansions flood to the Monaco Grand Prix each year to cater for the rich and famous. Alongside wealthy celebrities, drivers such as Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Eddie Irvine are all the owners of similar high quality super yachts. Meanwhile, Newey will join Eddie Jordan in an elite club of Oyster yacht owners.
However, it is not Newey’s first time in the world of Sailing, with the Red Bull engineer taking a back seat in 2015 to help Ben Ainslie attempt to win Sailing’s most prestigious trophy, the American Cup.
Now, Newey has confirmed that seeing his new Yacht hit the water for the first time will be a “big landmark” in his personal life.
“Seeing the splash after she emerges from the build shed will be a big landmark,” the Brit added. “It’s all personal, and that’s the great thing about building a boat from new.”
The new documentary “Adrian Newey, building my Oyster” is set to be released in January 2024 and will show Formula One enthusiasts the methodology of transferring the skills of creating a race-winning car to the production of the high-performance sailing yacht.
