Fancy wording might catch the eye, but it also carries the risk of overselling a product by setting up impossibly high expectations. Safe to say, luxury yacht builder Oceanco, one of the heaviest names in this segment of the market, is in no such danger.

In plainer words, the yachts bearing the Simply Custom designation used the proven Oceanco naval platform in combination with designs from some of the best design studios in the world while also offering the possibility of further customization by the client.
The Simply Custom Collection will include 17 vessels of varying sizes, but none smaller than 80 meters (262 feet), boasting the latest tech for enhanced performance, efficiency, and sustainability. As of the time of writing, Oceanco has unveiled the first three entries in the line: the Espen Øino-designed Clarity, and Storm and Portofino, penned by H2 Yacht Design.

The fourth and most recent project in this super-fancy portfolio lives up to whatever expectations you formed when reading the headline. It’s called Superleggera 80, and it’s an 80-meter (262-foot) superyacht with a very remarkable silhouette, incredible amenities, the most sophisticated interior, and top-of-its-class features and tech.
Superleggera 80 is designed by Milan-based Hot Lab, and no, the name is no coincidence. “Superleggera,” which means “super lightweight,” is an auto coachwork construction technology developed by Felice Bianchi Anderloni from Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera in the 1930s, and it translates here into a clear 1960s automotive inspiration in the long, “sexy” lines of the hull and superstructure.
Superleggera 80 is beautiful to look at, eschewing the standard “layered cake” silhouette of many contemporary yachts in favor of more distinctive – and definitely vintage-inspired – styling. There’s nothing “old” about the interior or the tech onboard, though: as promised, Oceanco and their latest partner, Hot Lab, crafted the perfect, modern, and optimally-equipped vessel for the most discerning potential customer.

As Hot Lab describes it, the interior of this superyacht was designed to evoke the feel of an “expansive penthouse.” It’s a floating penthouse, if you will, featuring expansive glazing and expensive works of art, lavish amenities and gorgeous private spaces that promise the best experience possible. Modern furniture and statement lighting further help define this unique space for the 14 guests who will be on board, sleeping in the seven lavish suites.
Highlights from the studio include a giant but fully-equipped gymnasium, which spills out into a breathtaking lounge with a custom bar with skylights and a large balcony. With money being no object, the most prized commodity onboard Superleggera 80 is space, as evidenced by the 5-meter (17-foot) high ceiling in the main deck atrium.
That same feeling of limitless space comes from the use of glass bulwarks on the aft deck and seemingly countless outdoor spaces, whether for privacy or socializing. In the latter category comes the huge lounge on the aft deck, the infinity pool, the al fresco spaces for dining and lounging on the upper decks, fold-down balconies throughout, the jacuzzi on the foredeck, and the swim platform at the stern.

“At Hot Lab, we understand that today’s clients place higher value on how a space connects them to such deeper emotions, rather than simply serving a practical function,” says Antonio Romano from the design studio. When money can buy you everything else in life, count on Oceanco and Hot Lab to deliver “space” within the very limited confines of a privately owned vessel.
The brief focuses mostly on the “sexy” lines of Superleggera 80 and its decidedly sophisticated interiors but leaves out the description of the naval platform and propulsion.
This means that this superyacht, like the other entries from the Simply Custom Collection, will get a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system capable of running on low-carbon biofuels, as well as podded drives and an optimized stabilization system for the smoothest, most efficient experience under sail. A smooth, safe, and environmentally-conscious sailing experience was among the promises Oceanco made in the general presentation for the Simply Custom line.

Oceanco has long gone public with their decision to optimize their vessels so as to offer lower carbon footprints and better efficiency, and they’re working towards achieving that.
For the time being, Superleggera 80 qualifies as a concept yacht, if only because there’s no timeline for its development yet. That could change in a flash, though, if the right, well-heeled, discerning future owner comes along to put the final touches on what is already an impressive floating toy.
