Pet boutique Château de MarMutt opened earlier this year at 1134 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The shop is owned by Pigtown native Juliana Stube (JES) who also owns pet apparel brand JES made.
“I really wanted something that spoke to elevating a dog’s lifestyle,” said JES. “Just as kids are spoiled, I want dogs to come in and have luxury shopping experience. Consider us the Nordstrom for pets and Janie & Jack.”
JES said Château de MarMutt offers the latest unique treats and toys customers typically don’t see online or big box stores. This includes items such as dog macaroons, dog cigars, ‘dog beer’ made of bone broth, sugar-free ice cream, premium birthday cakes, and Orioles and Ravens gear.
JES made makes custom dog and cat apparel with fabrics sourced from local thrift shops. JES said her goal is to be a zero-waste manufacturer. Pets can come in to get fitted and JES meets the animals and their owners to design apparel that fits their lifestyles.
“I was tired of dog clothes falling apart and items that don’t fit the unique shape and size of different pets,” said JES.
After being laid off right before the COVID-19 pandemic, JES said she became depressed between job hunting, quarantine, and dwindling funds so she began dog walking and discovered that being around dogs made her happy. This motivated the revival of JES made. She started a dog walking business and then launched JES made with the help of a fully-funded Kickstarter campaign.
Upon learning about Maryland’s Project Restore program that aims to fill vacant retail locations post the COVID-19 pandemic, JES became interested in opening a brick-and-mortar location. Although Chateau de MarMutt was not a recipient, “the paws had to move on,” said JES, who found a home at 1134 S. Charles St.
The business name is a take on the famous Beverly Hills hotel Chateau Marmont.
Château de MarMutt is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm and Sunday from 10am to 6pm, as well as by appointment.
