Porsche, the cult brand that has been enthralling car enthusiasts around the world for decades, is now on its way to conquering the electric world. While Porsche purists might cringe at the thought, the numbers don’t lie. Did you know that Porsche sells almost as many 911s as electric Taycans? Yes, you read that right!

The Porsche Taycan, which debuted in 2019, has quickly become one of the most popular electric sedans on the market. With its outstanding performance and luxurious design, it became the first electric car to truly challenge Tesla’s dominance. In 2020, Porsche sold more than 20,000 Taycans, which was an impressive start for the new model. In 2021, Taycan sales rose to more than 41,000 units, representing more than 100% growth in one year (source: InsideEVs). In 2022, Porsche sold more than 34,000 Taycans, indicating a slight slowdown in growth, but still an extremely successful year (source: Porsche Newsroom).

The arrival of the new electric Macan will further increase the number of electric vehicles sold by Porsche. Already popular as a second car in the family, the Macan is sure to attract even more buyers with its electric version and help electric vehicles account for more than half of Porsche’s total sales.

Although the Taycan leads the pack, it’s not the only electric and hybrid car in Porsche’s range. In recent years, other models have also gained electrified versions, such as the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid and the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. The Cayenne E-Hybrid is a hybrid SUV that combines performance and efficiency, making it a popular choice for SUV enthusiasts (source: Porsche Newsroom). The Panamera E-Hybrid offers the same luxury and performance as the traditional Panamera, but with less environmental impact (source: GlobeNewswire).

Let’s see how sales of electric models compare to classic gasoline models. For example, the Porsche Macan and Cayenne are among the brand’s best-selling models. In 2022, the Porsche Macan will sell around 80,000 units, the Porsche Cayenne around 95,000 units, while the Porsche 911 will reach around 38,000 units sold (source: Porsche Newsroom). Compared to those numbers, the Taycan’s sales of more than 34,000 units show that electric models are already catching up and surpassing the popularity of some traditional models.

And what does this mean for the iconic Porsche 911? Many purists were concerned that electrification might compromise the soul and performance of this legendary sports car. However, these concerns are unfounded. Porsche has proven that they can combine tradition and innovation. The new Porsche 911 will continue to offer the true driving experience that enthusiasts know and love. Electrification does not mean that they will forget about gasoline engines, but they will create a symbiosis of both worlds, which will surely bring the best of both. Although Porsche has yet to officially announce an exact launch date, the first all-electric 911 is expected to hit the roads around 2030. Until then, Porsche is focusing on electrifying other models and improving battery technology and performance to ensure that the electric 911 will not only be eco-friendly an alternative, but also a true sports icon as we know it today.

Although Porsche may not want it to become common knowledge, it is becoming one of the leading manufacturers of electric cars. Their commitment to quality, performance and innovation is evident in every model they introduce. And don’t worry, the Porsche 911 will remain a symbol of sports cars, regardless of whether it has a gasoline or electric engine under the hood. So, is Porsche already an all-electric car brand? Well, if he hasn’t yet, he’s well on his way!
