Sanlorenzo has set a new benchmark in the yachting industry by launching the first unit of its 50Steel series, the world’s premier superyacht featuring a Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system. This groundbreaking innovation allows the yacht’s onboard hotel systems to operate with zero emissions, marking a pivotal stride towards carbon neutrality.
The 50Steel also introduces the HER (Hidden Engine Room) system, a pioneering design that optimises space to create an additional living area, transforming traditional yacht layouts.
Massimo Perotti, chairman and CEO of the Sanlorenzo Group, commented, “With the launch of the 50Steel, Sanlorenzo celebrates a fundamental milestone in its history, in the spirit of innovation and sustainability. Our new line of superyachts embodies the pioneering spirit and passion for challenges that have always guided us in the design and construction of our fleet.”
In collaboration with Siemens Energy, Sanlorenzo has developed a modular reformer-fuel cell system that converts green methanol into hydrogen, which is then transformed into electrical energy. This system powers all hotel systems on the yacht without storing hydrogen onboard. Capable of generating up to 100kW of electrical energy, the system can operate with the propulsion engines and diesel generators turned off, achieving about 90% of typical superyacht usage with zero emissions.
Patented by Sanlorenzo, the HER system redefines yacht design by enabling a new interpretation of space. By horizontally developing the propulsion systems and redistributing the technical area to the underside of the lower deck, Sanlorenzo has created an additional lounge space, the Ocean Lounge. This area is seamlessly connected to the aft Beach Club, which features a pool, and the guest area, complete with a gym and spa.
Spanning over five staggered decks, the 50Steel boasts unprecedented volumes and elegant spaces while maintaining a clean, streamlined exterior profile designed by Zuccon International Project studio. The main deck features a spacious salon, epitomising the essence of the onboard experience. The layout includes four guest cabins, one owner’s cabin, and two pools on the aft Beach Club and the sun deck.
Piero Lissoni, Sanlorenzo’s Art Director, has crafted sophisticated interiors using coffered ceilings and dark wood walls. Employing 3D technology for the first time, Lissoni ensured optimal control over every detail by overlaying the technical and architectural models.
The 50Steel, with its innovative design and sustainability features, represents a significant leap forward in the superyacht industry, setting new standards for luxury and environmental responsibility.
