CAMERON – In one of the more unique annual events of the cross country season, the Shadyside girls and Parkersburg South boys cross country teams placed first in the Wild and Wet Cross Country Invitational at Cameron High School on Saturday, Sept. 23.

In an unorthodox, challenging course with multiple creek crossings baked into the race path, the Shadyside Tigers girls placed two runners in the top five of the 41-woman race to finish atop the competition, including a first-place finish from Tigers freshman Chloe Meholovitch.

Meholovitch ran the race in 22:26.49, powering through to the gold just under two seconds in front of Parkersburg South’s Lexi McKinney. Tyler Consolidated’s Lilly Dillaman (24:11.83), fellow Shadyside freshman Maya Filburn (24:47.52) and John Marshall junior Cameron McCord (24:49.87) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cameron’s Jenelle Shabdue finished sixth in her home turf, Tyler’s Lilly Haught finished seventh, John Marshall’s Taylee Sipin finished eighth, and Wheeling Central Catholic’s Ellie Manning finished 10th.

John Marshall finished second, Parkersburg South third and Wheeling Central Catholic fourth in the girls race. Eight other schools competed but did not have enough finishers to qualify as a team, including Tyler, Magnolia, Cameron, Buckeye Local, Paden City and St. John.

On the boys’ side of the action, Parkersburg South finished first, John Marshall second, Tyler third, Brooke fourth and Wheeling Central Catholic fifth. Magnolia, Cameron, Paden City, Shadyside and Buckeye Local were among the eight schools who competed but did not qualify as a team.

The Maroon Knights’ Aidan Scott finished first among the 51-man field, the senior running a 17:18.38, putting a comfortable margin between he and second-place Amos Kimble (17:34.13) from Tyler Consolidated. Magnolia junior Landen Davis (17:35.12) finished third, Brooke freshman Gavin Scott (18:50.87) finished fourth, and Tyler freshman Travis Moore (18:52.75) finished fifth.

Paden City’s Riley Dennis finished sixth, John Marshall’s Aidan Nelson finished eighth and Tyler’s Brody Nice finished ninth to round out the top 10.
