Two soirees on different sides of the Atlantic prompted A-listers to pull out all the horological stops this week.
The third Academy Museum Gala, which took place in Los Angeles, California on Sunday night, saw a bevy of Hollywood stars gussy up in elegant black-tie attire. Robert Downey Jr. was arguably the best-dressed gent at the stateside event, paring a monochromatic Givenchy outfit designed by Matthew Williams with a limited-edition Cartier Santos-Dumont. Lenny Kravitz, Taylor Perez, Jay Ellis, and Barry Keoghan also wore notable watches by Jaeger-LeCoultre, TAG Heuer, Rolex, and Omega, respectively.
Across the pond, designers, models, and celebs gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday for the annual British Fashion Awards. As you might expect, all the big names stepped out in dramatic designer looks. Stormzy elevated a rather understated neutral ensemble with Prada America’s Cup sneakers and one of the most expensive Rolexes ever made.
Travis Scott didn’t attend either of the aforementioned events but rocked a cool custom take on his new Audemars Piguet model that watch enthusiasts will appreciate.

Robert Downey Jr.: Cartier Santos-Dumont
Image Credit: Getty/Cartier What do you pair with Givenchy? Cartier. Robert Downey Jr. repped both respected labels at the third Academy Museum Gala on Sunday. Cartier unveiled the leading man’s striking Santos-Dumont (Ref. WGSA0053) at Watches & Wonders last year. As its moniker implies, the platinum timepiece is an homage to Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian innovator who designed his first men’s watch for Cartier in 1904. It features a 43 mm platinum case lacquered in burgundy (a first for the brand), an elegant white dial with silver Roman numerals, and a beaded crown set with a ruby cabochon. It also has the handwritten signature of Santos-Dumont engraved on the caseback. The model was limited to just 150 examples and is no longer produced. You can score one on the resale market for around $28,000, though.

Lenny Kravitz: Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

The “American Woman” singer’s new Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon (Ref. Q392242J) evokes classic 1930s models with a pared-down aesthetic and simple silver dial that allows the movement to take center stage. The reverse dial is bolder and more complex, with a partially skeletonized design and a black sunray-brushed dial. Released earlier this year, the newcomer will set you back $139,000. It’s basically two watches in one, though.

Taylor Perez: TAG Heuer Carrera

The Kissing Booth actor wore a modern riff on the first “glass box” Carrera from the 1960s. Released only this past October, the timepiece (CBS2240.FC8319) features a 39 mm case and dial made of solid 18-karat gold. Priced at $21,500 a pop, the luxurious take on the iconic racer has proved itself perfect for the red carpet.

Travis Scott: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
Image Credit: Getty/Instagram Travis Scott just unveiled a new chocolate take on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar that was inspired by his record label Cactus Jack. It’s cool, but not as cool as the one-off version the rapper wore to the AP party celebrating the collab. This special iteration is distinguished by a striking “rainbow” bezel that comprises some 32 multi-colored sapphires. It’s his and his alone, but you can get the brown edition for $201,000.

Stormzy: Rolex Daytona

The “Vossi Bop” rapper paired Prada America’s Cup sneakers with a Rolex Daytona (Ref. 116505). The dazzling timepiece features a 40 mm case in Everose gold and a bezel set with a collection of rainbow sapphires. To top it off, the bracelet, dial, and case are all adorned with after-market diamonds. Wrist candy like this, which is typically customized after being purchased from an authorized dealer, can command a pretty penny on the resale market. Jay Ellis: Rolex Datejust 41
Image Credit: Getty/Rolex Insecure star Jay Ellis sparkled at the Academy Museum Gala in an embellished double-breasted Fendi blazer and a Rolex Datejust 41 (Ref. 126334). The watch features a 41 mm case made of Oystersteel and white gold (Rolesor), the Crow’s signature fluted bezel, and a traditional Jubilee bracelet. (The five-link Jubilee bracelet was designed and made especially for the launch of the Datejust in 1945, while Rolesor has appeared on Rolexes since the ‘30s.) The timepiece also sports a bright black dial with a date aperture at 3 o’clock. It will set you back $10,700.

Barry Keoghan: Omega Seamaster
Image Credit: Getty/Omega Barry Keoghan of Saltburn fame picked the perfect Omega to complement his bold Givenchy look at this year’s Academy Museum Gala. The sleek Seamaster Planet Ocean’s almost monochromatic colorway pairs perfectly with the actor’s olive ensemble. The timepiece features a black ceramic case and a matching black bezel with a white enamel diving scale. The dial is also black ceramic and sports contrasting 18-karat white-gold numerals, indexes and hands, as well as a date window at 3 o’clock. Looks aside, the sturdy chronometer is water resistant to 600 meters (2,000 feet). Hey, Keoghan might want to go for a deep-sea dive in his free time. You can pick one up for $11,200.
