While the King celebrated three quarters of a century with an intimate event at Clarence House, the Duchess of Edinburgh was otherwise engaged at an event at Rochester Cathedral in Kent. Both Sophie and Prince Edward, the King’s youngest brother and wife, were unable to attend the King’s significant birthday celebration at his private residence.
Prince Edward was otherwise engaged in Singapore at a reception for the General Assembly, where he is carrying out his duties as Vice Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation. Meanwhile, and a little closer to home, Sophie was attending an event in honour of Rochester Cathedral Trust, a charity of which the Duchess of Edinburgh is a patron.
The Duchess balanced glamour with professionalism at the event, where she wore the ‘Larigne’ wrap dress from MaxMara. The Italian brand – famous for its chic coats and quietly luxurious designs – is one favoured by several of the royal family, including both Kate and Meghan.
After a week of public events, including a party at Highgrove with neighbouring nominees and one at Buckingham Palace with NHS midwives and nurses, the event on the King’s actual birthday evening was no doubt intended as an antidote to the birthday boy’s busy schedule. He was joined by William and Kate, who dazzled in a green sparkly number from Needle and Thread, as well as Princess Beatrice and Zara Tindall and her husband, along with other close friends and family.
