Reliability and off-roading go hand in hand. One of the most important metrics of a 4×4 is how well it’ll hold up over time, especially considering you’re most likely going to put it under a lot of strain, hitting trails and obstacles. You’ll want to know that you’re not going to get stranded in the wilderness thanks to some silly mechanical issue.
While rugged simplicity and reliability often go hand in hand, the car with the highest reliability score in 2024 is actually a luxury SUV. The midsize, trail-hunting Lexus GX shows off the Japanese automaker’s legendary dependability. You can have comfort and capability all in one neat package.
We take a look at all the details behind the reliability of the Lexus GX, uncovering how much it costs to maintain and how often it’ll need a major repair. We also explain just what makes it such a capable off-roader, from its incredible powertrain to its modern technology.

The Lexus GX Scores 89 Out Of 100 For Quality And Reliability
The Lexus GX enters a whole new generation for the 2024 model year, with updates to just about everything. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that it’s incredibly capable and reliable. It’s been around just long enough that we can get a good sense of just how reliable it is.
Reliability
J.D. Power is a brilliant source for reliability information. The site uses the reviews of verified owners to assign scores to cars. The 2024 Lexus GX has been around just long enough that owners have had an opportunity to get a feel for the midsize SUV and just how many issues it has.
On J.D. Power, the 2024 Lexus GX scores higher than any other 4×4 in terms of reliability, with a score of 89 out of 100. Even though the Lexus GX was becoming severely outdated towards the end of the previous generation’s life cycle, owners were still praising the SUV for its reliability, with it consistently scoring above 80 out of 100.
Warranties
Maintenance and repair costs for the new 2024 Lexus GX 550 aren’t going to be available until it’s had some time on the market. Most owners have yet to even hit their first service. Instead, we’ll focus on what assurances Lexus gives you on their off-road SUV to give you some peace of mind.
Lexus beats most other luxury manufacturers in terms of their warranties. The limited warranty on the Lexus GX is offered for four years or 50,000 miles. Their warranty on the powertrain covers any issues for six years or 70,000 miles. On top of this, Lexus offers one year or 10,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, meaning your first service is covered by the automaker.

The Lexus GX is not the cheapest midsize luxury SUV, but it isn’t the most expensive either. It comes in a number of different trim levels which offer differing levels of both comfort and capability.
A New Generation Of GX
The Lexus GX is one of the brand’s oldest and most respected nameplates. It’s been hailed for its off-road ability which finely blends with plenty of luxuries. The previous generation was in dire need of an update, which is why we welcome the new GX 550 with smiles and open arms.
The 2024 GX 550 rides on a completely new platform, the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra. It ditches the V-8 from last year, which may upset some, but it gains a more powerful twin-turbo V-6. Its boxy design aligns it with the new Land Cruiser, making the link between mainstream Toyota and luxury Lexus clear. The GX slots in perfectly between the full-size LX and the smaller TX.

The 2024 Lexus GX has two different sides. One version of the midsize SUV is a luxury on-road cruiser that will carry you and your passengers in style. The other is a rugged luxury off-roader that comes fitted with everything you’ll need to conquer just about any terrain.
If you’re seeking a big, capable SUV that you’re going to keep on the road most of the time, then the Luxury spec is probably the best suited for you. If you’re someone who is going to regularly hit the off-road, the Overtrail+ model can be had for the exact same price but with a more rugged look and better capability, at the expense of the third row and some luxuries. CarBuzz goes into more detail regarding the differences between each trim level.

Best Large Luxury SUVs Of 2024 Ranked By Reliability
If you are hauling a family around, you certainly do not want to break down. Let’s dive into the best large SUVs ranked by reliability for 2024.
A 349 Twin-Turbo V-6 Powers Every Lexus GX
One of the biggest changes to the Lexus GX for the new generation comes with the new powertrain. While many enthusiasts will be sad to see the V-8 go, the brand-new twin-turbocharged V-6 makes more power and is more efficient. It may not be as raucous as a V-8, but at least it isn’t an inline-four.

While the previous generation of the GX made 301 horsepower, the current GX 550’s blown V-6 makes 48 more horses. It comes matted to a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard and features four-wheel drive. TopSpeed’s own Chris Chin has driven the GX 550 and praises this powertrain and transmission combo, among other things.
Compared to its rivals, the GX is also pretty impressive. It may not be the fastest in its class, with other luxury midsize SUVs being quicker to the 60-mile-per-hour mark. However, the Lexus GX is all about capability. Its maximum towing capacity of 9,096 pounds outclasses basically every other car in the midsize luxury SUV segment.
Off-Road Capability
The 2024 Lexus GX is built to handle anything, especially when had in either of the Overtrail trims. These models come with 18-inch wheels and 33-inch all-terrain tires. This gives these models 8.86 inches of ground clearance. Its approach angle is 26°, its departure angle is 22° and its breakover is 24°.
On top of its wheels, the GX 550 in the off-road trims features an aluminum skid plate, a crawl function, and an adaptive suspension system. On top of this, the GX features selectable drive modes optimized for different terrains. The transfer case on the GX 550 allows you to go into the low-range gearset without locking the center differential. It also features a system called the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that allows you to disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently to improve stability.

The 2024 GX’s Interior Is Everything You Would Expect From A Lexus
The Lexus GX is a reliable, powerful, and impressive off-road SUV. One of the main selling points of any Lexus, however, is their luxurious cabins. The GX 550 delivers this in spades, with an interior that can compete with any other luxury SUV on the market. Its long list of standard features is paired with a long list of optional extras.
Comfort
The boxy design expressed on the outside is followed through in the interior. However, while the exterior is rugged and rough, the interior exudes opulence. Faux- or genuine leather covers all the seats in the GX. In the Luxury or Premium trims, the GX can be equipped with a third row of seating as well as second-row captain’s chairs.
Front-row seats are heated and ventilated as standard. On luxury models, these seats are 10-way power operated and feature a built-in massaging function. The leather steering wheel is heated on every trim other than the base model.
Technology
A 14-inch infotainment screen is standard in the 2024 Lexus GX 550 alongside a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. The digital gauge display can be reconfigured to show an array of information based on your preferences. A 10-speaker stereo system is standard, but a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system is optional.
On top of the long list of tech features that are standard, you can equip your Lexus GX with a heads-up display and a digital key fob. A panoramic view monitor is standard on every model, but the off-road trims feature a multi-terrain monitor as well.
