A gorgeous library in this historic home had an abundance of original, built-in bookcases and four sets of French doors leading both indoors and out. Designer Kate Marker’s goal was to turn this literary lair into a second family room where everyone could hang out. To do that, she removed some shelves, making space for art and a dry bar, then added ample seating, a game table, and ottomans for kick-back time.
When they first set out to transform the space, Marker wasn’t sure if she could bring herself to paint over the original millwork. But in an effort to modernize the room while playing off its original features, she chose an unforgettable color: Broccoli Brown by Farrow & Ball, a moody hue with hints of green that changes throughout the day. “If I lived here,” she says, “this is where I’d have coffee every morning and a drink at night.”
Marker removed three columns of bookcases to add a stone bar top with a shelf for glassware.
On either side of the original fireplace, paneled-door cabinets (meant to look like walls) conceal a low-key libation closet.
The walls open to reveal a secret stash of spirits for the mixologist of the house.
French doors lead to a timeless patio outside the library, which Kate Marker Interiors also designed.
