In the heart of Amsterdam, amidst the serene backdrop of its famous canals, a new chapter in the boating industry’s storied history is about to be written. May 2024 marks the inaugural World Boating Day, a groundbreaking initiative that promises to reshape the future of the global boating community. Spearheaded by The Superyacht Life Foundation, this event stands as a testament to the industry’s unyielding spirit of innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.

A Global Celebration of Boating Excellence

World Boating Day is more than just an event; it’s a worldwide movement designed to bring the boating community together in a shared celebration of the waterways that connect us. Set to take place from May 25-26, 2024, this initiative aims to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes of the boating world, from the master craftsmen behind the most luxurious yachts to the young talents shaping the future of marine design and engineering.

The event’s ‘glocal’ approach—combining global reach with local impact—invites local, regional, and national industry bodies to amplify the message, ensuring that the celebration resonates in marinas, shipyards, and sailing clubs around the world.

Bridging Communities and Fostering Careers

At the core of World Boating Day is a mission to demystify the boating industry for the general public. Through open days and interactive events, participating companies will showcase the breadth of career paths available, from naval architecture to luxury yacht marketing. It’s an unprecedented opportunity for aspiring professionals to glimpse the future of leisure boating and yachting sectors, driving innovation and talent recruitment.

Joe Lynch, CEO of ICOMIA (the International Council of Marine Industry Associations), encapsulates the sentiment of many industry leaders: “Taking part in World Boating Day is an exceptional way to elevate the worldwide appreciation of diverse leisure boating sectors, and ultimately to celebrate moments on the water on an international scale!”

Supported by Key Organizations

The initiative has garnered support from an impressive roster of international organizations, including ICOMIA, AIMEX, ISS (International Superyacht Society), Superyacht Australia, APSA (Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association), EBI (European Boating Industry), BIA (Boating Industry Association), USSA (US Superyacht Association), and Zeal Marinas Network. This collaborative effort underlines the campaign’s potential to foster a deeper connection between the boating industry and its enthusiasts, amplifying its reach and impact.

Niels Klarenbeek, Director of METSTRADE, highlights the innovative nature of the campaign: “This is an innovative campaign for our cherished boating world! We can’t wait to hear the creative ways our network will join in the campaign.”

Engaging the Community

World Boating Day encourages participation from a wide range of stakeholders, including shipyards, design studios, sailing schools, marinas, and retail businesses. The flexibility of the event format allows participants to tailor activities to their audiences, whether through public openings, collaborations with universities, or more exclusive events.

Luke McCaul, Director of Zeal Marinas, emphasizes the role of World Boating Day in building awareness and driving participation: “As an ambassador in the South Pacific, I’m excited to ignite community engagement and add a burst of energy to this first edition.”

A Sustainable Future

Sustainability and environmental stewardship are at the forefront of World Boating Day. Philip Easthill, Secretary-General of the European Boating Industry, stresses the importance of connecting the industry with environmental conservation: “By bringing our industry closer to users, we can grow boating, inspire more people to protect our waters, and foster a passion for the seas across Europe and beyond.”

Join the Movement

World Boating Day is a call to action for anyone passionate about the future of boating and the preservation of our planet’s precious waterways. It’s an opportunity to unite under a common banner, celebrate our achievements, and look forward to a sustainable and inclusive future.
